UGLY and bizarre: Senseless shooting of camper in Colorado

The Durango Herald 08/31/2012 | Details of deadly shooting released

In a nutshell, a couple of camping students end up drinking and smoking with a stranger. Stranger shows off a pistol, eventually firing a shot into the air and getting agitated and threatening when they asked him to put it away. Eventually he ends up shooting one of the students, and the other runs off calling for help. Help arrived in the form of an ex Marine nearby who, with his own gun, confronts the stranger and subdues him until police arrive. Interesting to note that they specifically mention activating a laser sight.

Overall a bizarre, tragic, and senseless shooting, but shows the importance of vigilance.

I wouldhave sent my wife to find cell service and call it in while i sat on him, not the other way round as the Marine did.

Senseless. Never smoke pot with someone you don't know (or in my case I just don't smoke pot).

Did not say that. What I said was "Senseless. Never smoke pot with someone you don't know (or in my case I just don't smoke pot)."

Let's take it sentence by sentence:

    1. Senseless. = Self-Explanatory

    2. Never smoke pot with someone you don't know (or in my case I just don't smoke pot). = Don't hang around with someone you don't know. Even more so, don't do drugs (drinking, pot, cocaine, whatever) with someone you don't know. Being military I am not allowed to do illegal drugs.

That guy has a screw loose and most likely it was the booze that helped him with his wrong judgment. I have partied with many a stranger and have had some of the best times. Let’s face it; most of the people you know where strangers at one point. Don’t use this one instance to cloud your mind

When you believe people are "basically good" you leave yourself vulnerable to people who aren't.

Correction: former Marine. "Ex Marine" is like saying "ex mother."

Looks like they need to study a bit more diligently, regarding basic survival strategies.

Ashburn, the shooter looks to be a bit squirrely.
His actions are NOT that of a rational person, inebriated or not

You meet a few flakes in campgrounds. It is a favorite place to hide for fugitives, but rangers know that and usually copy license numbers and run them all at the station.
