Is a threat a legitimate reason to fear for your life?

In this case, and with the information given in the story, yes...IMO.

No non lethal options? With a one armed guy in a wheelchair? He was waving a metal object around, which turned out to be a pen - so not a machete or anything...

The group home staff should have been better trained, IMO, than to call the police on a mentally ill man causing a disturbance.

You can determine that from a news article? Interesting.

One armed, one legged, in a wheelchair, waving an object the size of a pen, versus a physically capable police officer. You can't tell me that there's no way he could've taken care of the situation without killing the man. This guy was not a legitimate threat. If this cop actually felt that his life was in danger, then perhaps he needs a psych eval before getting back out in the field.

Yes, I possess the ability to read an article, look at the facts included in it and form an opinion based on said details.
The guy was 'armed' with a pen? Less than lethal options should of been used.

He should be fired and charged.

I would think that this definitely could've been handled in a less than lethal manner.... wow.

I understand that he was worried for his life, and that things were probably happening pretty fast, but they're trained for this.... last thing you want is to get into the habit of shoot first, ask questions later.. that's just my opinion... what do I know... I wasn't there.

I mean, its Houston.. they've got to be constantly dealing with people with mental disorders and people messed up on all sorts of dope... crack, meth, alcohol, heroine...

Idk... guess you had to be there.

Not unless you are wearing a Badge it seems.

Bad Shoot with info available at this point IMO but nothing will happen accept Paid Vacation which this officer already has experience with since he was involved in a previous shoot that on the surface seemed like a good shoot unlike this one.
Everyone has an opinion & this is just mine sorry if it offends anyone.

Post was edited. Small typing error and mistake. I read the article but thanks for trying to imply I didn't.

No implication was necessary. You did the hard work yourself.
