"Mr Ferrie, 35, and his wife Tracey, 43, were held in custody for nearly two days after Mr Ferrie called police to tell them he fired his shotgun at the intruders."

Baby-steps in the right direction, but the victims of the home invasion should not have been locked up for two-days as a consequence of protecting their own lives. Still, the truth is a stubborn thing. I'm glad to see some good sense coming out of the U.K. on this.

All to the good, IMO. Perhaps the idiot will recognize EVERYONE has the right to defend against such people who seek to take from others. Perhaps the courts are starting to recognize that as well. One can only hope. The people in the U.K. have lived in prison, in that regard, for far too long.

Baby steps is correct. I'm not sure, but am under the impression that a legally owned shotgun must be shown to have need. At the very least, everyone should have the right to a firearm in the home.

    Niks,

it's somewhat old news... and has been posted before (see: Tide may be turning in Brittain) But some folks in Britain seem to be getting it.. some judges... some parliamentarians...

We can only hope that the Brits don't beg us for guns again to defend themselves against their own resident criminals/terrorists... as they begged for our guns for homeland defense before we officially entered WWII.
    Rats!
    It could be worse!
    I suppose

Does sound like a little common sense was used in this case. Unfortunately, the home owner and his wife had to stay in jail for 2 days, and post bail, before the charges were dropped. BUT ath least the charges were dropped. As for the burglers, they got what they deserved (IMHO). EVERYBODY has the RIGHT to defend themselves and their property.
No trees were harmed in the construction of this post. However a large number of electrons were indiscriminately aroused.

Hah. As if having your home invaded and being tortured to be sure you tell where all your valuables are are not "akin to a "near-death experience" for which he was not prepared."???

Oh, boo-hoo. I am soooo sorry for those two pooooor burglers. Booo-hooo.

That is insanity, to be sure. Ridiculous, that daring to defend their lives against home invaders begets jail and charges.

But then, we experience some of this in the USA as well. Hence "Castle" laws raising the bar of justification for such crap beyond merely supposing someone must have done wrong if they're the last ones standing. Sad. Criminal, and sad.
