It isn't stolen, but the police are holding it as evidence. It should be fairly clear, given the description of the firearm, exactly what happened. I would imagine it is worth a few dollars.
The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.

I'd just about bet money that pistol and book are going to be on the shelf of the Police Chiefs Office in about 3 days.
Had a friend with a pair of consecutive # matching, inlaid, Commemorative, Glass Cased, Colt 45's that were taken in a Burglury.
They caught the bad guy and sent him to jail.
But the guns mysteriously dissapeared from the evidence locker after the trial.

My friend spent 3 years and several thousand dollars tracking down his Commemoraative, one of a kind, working show pieces.

Turns out they were on the Police Chiefs Book Shelf the entire time.
He had to sue the City for their return!
What have you done to prepare for the end of civilization as we know it?

Held for evidence of what? The finder should be able to claim it if no one comes forth with a legitmate proof of ownership, just like a wad of cash found and turned in.

Agreed, but the rules seem to get all different when there is a gun is involved.

That Police Chief should be thrown under the jail. Gross misconduct and abuse of authority.
