How did this happen?
An accidental discharge of a handgun in a bag involving a deputy. The article says something "bumped against the gun" ... and that caused it to discharge? Any ideas? Is there more to this story than meets the eye? Good news is wound wasn't fatal and Deputy Fife no doubt learned a valuable lesson.

Looks to me like the Deputy simply tossed his loaded weapon into a bag without any form of trigger protection (a pocket holster would have been sufficient). Simple negligence.

Yeah, but what'd he have, a monkey in the bag to reach in and pull the trigger? Something bumps it gets trigger guard (the one built onto the frame), not trigger. Except from the side which isn't supposed to be able to depress the trigger, at least on Glocks.

Glad the bullet hit the idiot and not someone else...he could have killed someone because he failed to handle and store his firearm properly. I hope he learned his lesson.

Tossed gun in bag, reached into bag to get donut, pulled trigger of weapon, shot the dumbest person in the area. Mystery solved.
English is my second language, I have been told my use of it is harsh, apologies if this is the matter.

No holster = an accident looking for a place to happen.

you don't toss a loaded unholstered weapon into a bag that contains other stuff, just like you don't pocket carry a pistol and mix in your keys, change, pens, etc.
You never know when an angry jock strap may just reach out and pull the trigger.
Kimbers are the guns you show your friends....Glocks are the ones you show your enemies.

Methinks some critical details are absent from the story, as reported. It took more than gravity or inertia to overcome that "safe action" trigger.

me also thinks there some valuable information missing, like he was taking the gun out of the bag and putting it in a glove box and his finger accidently pulled the trigger

Wierd: Cumberland County chief jailer Maj. John McRainey wounded in ND
FayObserver.com - Cumberland County chief jailer Maj. John McRainey wounded in accidental shooting
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office chief jailer was wounded Wednesday morning when his gun accidentally discharged, authorities said.
Maj. John R. McRainey was getting ready to leave for work, between 7 and 7:30 a.m., when the gun fired, according to a release from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
McRainey had the .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun packed in a bag that he uses to transport it, the release said. He had put the bag in his vehicle and was getting inside the vehicle when another item in the bag apparently hit the gun, causing it to fire.
McRainey was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he underwent surgery for the injury, the release said. He was in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.
"Although it is always a tragedy anytime that anyone suffers a gunshot wound, we are just thankful that it was no worse than it was," Sheriff Moose Butler said in the release.
Fayetteville police assisted the Sheriff's Office in the investigation, the release said.
They all carry Glocks here.

That's what I'm thinking. If you read the comments from readers you see that others believe there's more here than is being told. Unless he had a monkey in that bag, I just don't see a "bump" causing a "bang".

It is better to die with a weapon in hand than to live with hands raised. (Meir Feinstein, 1947) ...But is far better to raise your hands with a weapon in them and assume a classic Weaver or Isosceles (BenGoodLuck, 2007)
