The shooting took place at 10:30 PM, but "No adults were home at the time." What could go wrong with a bunch of unsupervised eight graders at 10:30?

This is the part that got me-"We're told Neibel went looking through the house and found a 12-gauge shotgun." See comment above but when I was 13, I would have never "gone looking through" someone else's house.

I hate to say it, but looks like plenty of bad parenting to go around.

Kids will snoop... at 13 they were probably hoping for dad's playboy collection.

Wow. I've cleared shotguns before but never with the muzzle pointing at a 13-YO girl. I know for sure I'm not perfect, thus the precaution. How old do kids have to be before they realize that? Then again, that's the story. The truth might be different and may never be heard.

I never had a problem with my kids snooping around. How would I know if they were snooping around? They had freinds that came over. My solution was to put an exterior style locking doorknob on my bedroom. Required a key to get in. Never had to worry about them or their freinds messing with guns, medication or anything else. Trust had nothing to do with it, it was all about peace of mind.

IMHO this is why I believe Gun safety should be taught in school, just like drug education, sex education, the 4 rules of gun safety and safe gun handling would prevent many of these shootings,I'm not saying some dipstick wouldn't have an ND,but the muzzle would likely be pointed in a safe direction where some plaster and an ass chewing would fix it

I grew up with guns all over the house. I knew my father would beat me to death with the first one I thought about looking at when he was not at home! That was in the fifties long before kids were taught by the schools to dial 911 if your parents don't treat you nicely.

Yeah, my dad had guns in the corner of his room... ammo on the floor next to them.

I never shot anyone, or screwed around with them. The only time I even touched them was when we'd go pheasant hunting... Then again, they weren't 'taboo' and I was taught to respect them.

This is a parents worst nightmare, from BOTH perspectives.

@ 13 04 14 my kids would not have been allowed to have friends over until mom or dad were home

I agree. That responsibility lies mainly in the home, however some parents are losers and don't teach their kids nothing. So yes, schools should teach gun safety (the Eddie Eagle program), however it should be made clear to the teachers that they are not to express their own personal opinion about guns to the class. That's all we need is a bunch of Anti-2A (gun hating) teachers trying to influence our children that guns are evil.

Definitely. No adults, unsecured weapon, and kids without any firearms education. Take out any one of those and it probably wouldn't have happened.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Teach em' young. I got my first dose of reality at 3 years old. .357 vs. watermelon, with no hearing protection, followed by a lengthy lecture about firearms safety. I never had the slightest inclination to touch a gun without my parents with me.

Wow - tragic. My prayers to her family, and also to the family of the young man who killed her.

From the article linked by the OP....

....Officers say Burnette was accidentally hit with a shotgun, found and fired by a 14-year-old male friend inside her home.

....The police chief says the victim's mother was at the home earlier in the night when there were more children there but was gone at the time of the shooting. We're told the victim's stepfather is serving overseas and they're working to get him back to town.

My comments: Why was he so ignorant as to the basic operation of a simple shotgun? I blame the 'parents'. As Much As I Hate That Approach of Blame! - it is the common mantra of the Progressive ... Lef.......t
Socialism Kills! Time proven, with a very large body count! We are a Constitutional Republic....... not a Democracy, get it correct!
