BAD: Marion County Deputy shot and killed during traffic stop
That's where KSP officials say Deputy Anthony Raikes was shot during a traffic stop involving a 2007 Kia that was stopped in the middle of the road. We're told Raikes was out of his patrol car when the suspect -- identified as 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp of McDaniel, Ky., shot Raikes with a small caliber handgun.
Raikes was taken to Springview Hospital where he died during surgery.
Police weren't sure if Shipped was inside or outside his vehicle when he fired the shot.
Police say the suspect, 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp, of McDaniel, Ky., took off on foot but was later arrested in Campbellsville by Kentucky State Police and officers from the Campbellsville Police Department. Shipp was taken to the Taylor County Hospital to be treated for a leg injury.
No word on how Raikes injured his leg.
Deputy Raikes was a Marion County native and a 6-year veteran of the Marion County Sheriff's Department, who previously served with the Lebanon Police Department.
My condolences go out to family of the fallen officer.
