National German gun registry on target for launch

The German interior minister has said a countrywide database of all legal gun owners is set for launch on January 1. Hans-Peter Friedrich predicted a "considerable increase in security" as a result.

The German government plans to launch its complete registry of legal gun owners at the beginning of next year, two years ahead of a deadline set by the EU.

As with many German authorities, those responsible for weapons licensing and tracking operated on a local basis - with a total of 551 authorities around the country. Under new EU laws, all member countries are obliged to compile a centralized register.

There are an estimated 6 million licensed firearms in Germany.

At some point, I'd say it's a sure thing that such a comprehensive, centralized list will be abused in the extreme. It's only a matter of time.

If they would include illegal gun owners then they might make some progress in controlling crime.

Ach. No sense ruining the charade by tossing in facts.

Well, I'd say two things are certain: (1) we'll see criminals continuing to fail to register their firearms; and (2) we'll not see about the long-term threat in having it abused, for quite some time.

Bad -- The beat goes on / get worse

My husband and I were just having a gun control discussion Sat night - gun registration came up and he kind of had a 'what's the big deal' attitude about it. I straight faced told him if it ever came to pass we had to register guns that mine was lost in a boating accident, he could do what he wanted with his, it's always in the safe anyway and I don't like shooting it so it doesn't matter to me. This was after "discussing" the assault weapons ban and high capacity magazines. I've said it before...my next husband will be a gun guy...
