I think he(the homeowner/shooter) was simply trying to demonstrate what NOT to do with a loaded firearm,
as they sometimes have a mind of their own, and just go off and shoot things, and his volunteer from the audience got a little too close.

Rehabilitation is a myth fostered by liberals. You are unlike to do much if anytime here until you have a record a mile long.
How many time do we see it here xxxx arrest for gunning a man in front of club in Milwaukee, it has been report he was on parole for a murder 2 years ago. xxxx family said he was a good boy turning his life around .
Some can be "rehabilitated" but most just can't seem to leave the life of crime behind. They get caught up in the desire for gratification of any kind and it always centers around them and their "lack" of stuff that should be given to them for free. Yes, they are "always good kids just turning their lives around" because that's the instant excuse and justification for abhorrent behavior. Whatever became of personal responsibility? Rehabilitation, for the most part, is destined to fail. Say a felony "finds Jesus," decides to walk the straight and narrow, even goes as far as learning a trade in metal work (making tags?). The failure comes when no one wants to hire an ex-con, he gets bored, takes a toke of now "legal" MJ, wants more, needs some cash, hits the local Rob & Run, and the cycle starts all over again.
Trying to read-between -the-lines in this article, it sounds like when the neighbor/howeowners son confronted the guy the burgler closed the distence between them pretty quickly (aggressively with a screwdriver and sledge hammer no less) and began to attack the neighbor...... and the neighbor hesitated or didn't have the time or intestional fortitude to shoot.
If your gonna confront somebody with a gun, be prepared to use it.
Actually, with regards to rehabilitation, there's a huge maturing difference between a late-teen and a early-thirties. The brain itself matures and becomes incredibly more mellow over this time period. Now, it needs a proper environment to mature in a useful way, to be sure. There's certainly opportunity to rehabilitate someone, but it's goshdarn hard to do.
Honestly, if we could crack some type of psychological understanding which aided rehabilitation, the world would be a much better place. The truly evil people need to be sequestered, but it would be nice to lose fewer of the dumbasses
