Authorities are investigating what is being described as a school shooting early Friday in the town of Newton, Connecticut.
Preliminary reports suggest as many as two gunmen opened fire at around 9:40 a.m.
at Sandy Hook Elementary School. One of the suspected shooters has been reported dead, while another remains at large.
The police confirmed the shooting to BNO News shortly after, though other details have yet to be verified.
The Hartford Courant cites an unnamed police official who confirmed that at least one person has suffered several gunshot wounds. The Newton Bee is reporting multiple injuries.
The school has since been flanked by dozens of state troopers, who are assisting local officers dispatched to the scene.
All schools in Newton, CT have been placed on lockdown following orders from the superintendent, and the police are on the scene now attempting to determine the extent of the incident.
According to Nearbyhoods.com, Sandy Hook normally holds around 625 students in grades kindergarten through fourth. Roughly 40 teachers are employed there, the site claims.
