Interesting that he chose not to engage the shooter, especially since the loser was actively trying to clear a jam and continue the mayhem.

I probably would have taken him out, but that is a personal decision.

Most active killers suicide at the first indication of armed confrontation. This one appears to be no exception.

We need to rewrite the murder/suicide laws to require suicide first. Oh yeah, criminals would just break it anyway...

After the cryptic report from a couple of days ago where they said the "shooter had been neutralized", I figured something like this had happened. Doesn't seem likely the shooter would off himself just because the gun jammed; much more likely someone threatened to shoot him. Although it would be nice to know just how it went down; looks like when the CCWer approached the shooter who was trying to clear a jam, the shooter pulled a handgun and shot himself. If you were the CCWer and saw him draw a handgun, wouldn't you fire right away? I know I would.

Nick Meli may have stopped this incident from being a lot worse.

I'm still confused about how he shot himself if the gun was jammed. Has anyone seen anything about him having a handgun in addition to the rifle?

Well it begs the question -- who the heck brings just a jam-o-matic to a mall shooting? Maybe an anti-gunner who doesn't know the first thing about guns.

My guess is that he was able to clear the weapon after running into the back corridors of the mall. Hearing the sirens and shouting, he knew that game was up.

Seeing someone behind his target and holding fire was a good decision and shows pretty darn good restraint. Even though he didn't take the shot, at least he was there and he was armed in case his opportunity opened up. Good on him for being armed and thinking of other innocent people.

The stuff I read was that he dropped the jammed rifle in the hall and ran into Macy's. I admit I haven't followed the story much since the I was watching it live, though.

Call your local media outlets and spread the word. I already called my local TV stations, especially the FOX outlet.

I think I would have blown him away, too if I saw him draw a second gun. The way Nick handled it he didn't have to waste a round of precious ammo. I'm sure it was traumatic enough for the 22 year old to see & do what he did.
