Journal News Doubles Down: Will List EVEN MORE Gun Permit Holders After Uproar

The next batch of names will be permit holders in suburban Putnam County, New York,
where the county clerk told the newspaper it is still compiling information.

I'm glad Florida has has a statute that specifically exempts the list of permit holders from the Sunshine (government transparency) Laws, and provides penalties for disseminating or publishing those names.

Lets not forget we are also one of the few states that makes it illegal for local governments to pass gun regulations beyond state statutes, called the Penalties for Violating Firearms Preemption Law. The law forced the repeal of any and all local regulations, policies, and ordinances that violate the state's firearms preemption law of 1987. The violation of the state law by local a official or government body would be grounds for removal from office and/or a fine up to $5,000

Well! You will never guess who advertises with the Journal News? Our good friends Dicks Sporting Goods. The Westchester County Firearm Owners Association who is under attack from the Journal News published a list of all the advertisers, hoping that folks would call the advertiser and voice their displeasure. You can view updates to this ongoing saga here:

The list of advertisers is near the bottom of this lengthy, growing article.

If they go on to publish a list of weapons by type by person and address, that's like a shopping list for criminals. That would potentially put more weapons in the hands of criminals on the street. It just goes to show you they don't really care about criminals having guns, they are more concerned with law-abiding citizens having guns.

The media is merely a hand of the government...and that hand is reaching into our pockets.

I've been into the somewhat local Dick's Sporting Goods store, oh I guess about 3 maybe 4 times. Yet, have I to buy any of their over priced merchandise. Now nor will I ever even go into their store again.

I feel a lawsuit coming on. If they would be print a shopping list for thieves, a good Lawyer will tie in the actions of the Journal News to a liability action. Even more so if a death or injury occurs as a result the printing. Specifically when the authorities establish the perp got the information from the newspaper. Agree with you BigDude.

(The following comments are intended as sarcasm to point out the dangers of what these people are doing)

Maybe they should identify people who exercise other rights as outlined in our Constitution.

For example, maybe they could choose a group that practices a certain religion. Say, maybe Jewish. They could then put up a map with a Star of David over each person's address so that everyone knows who the Jewish people are.

    (again, sarcasm)

Stop reading their paper and put them out of business. Vote with your dollars. That is how we will voice our opinion the best.

Very good point! How about all the people who practice a middle eastern religion? I wonder if anyone would have an issue with that?

Anytime you print a group of names in a newspaper you single out those people and bring attention to them; be it positive or negative attention. The Journal is doing this with malicious intent (IMO) and should take responsibility when the SHTF... so to speak.

I would think the people on that list don't need to worry as much as the people who are NOT on that list. It's not a shopping list, it's a reverse lookup for safe work environments for criminals. If I still lived in ny and was not on the list, I would be asking to be added.

PA has the same pre-emption law.

I wonder if New York State's Reckless Endangerment law will be used if any harm comes to someone who was identified.

Didn't someone do something like that before? It didn't turn out so well for the people singled out if I recall...
