    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15318846/

"GRAND RAPIDS -- No charges will be brought against a Grand Rapids store manager who fatally shot a man during an attempted robbery..."

"...Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth says he reviewed the police report and surveillance video taken inside the store during the incident and made his decision relatively quickly. He told 24 Hour News 8 the store manager was protecting his own life and the lives of his coworkers..."

"...In his case it's self defense and it's also defense of others. ...The hero tag gets put on a lot of people and I think it gets overused. But what he did was pretty heroic here," Forsyth said."

"...24 Hour News 8 discovered a staggering increase in the number of people with CCW permits in Kent County. In 2000, 185 people had permits. A year later, the law loosened up dramatically.. Now, 3,900 people have permits."

Can you believe these statements are from a Prosecutor? From www.woodradio.com

"Kent County's Prosecutor says there will be no charges brought against the manager of Alger Heights Foods, who shot and killed a robber during an armed holdup last Friday night. William Forsyth says he views the response as heroic, given that a trio came in with guns drawn, pulled the hammer on their weapons and bound the 3 working at that time in a back room of the store. The manager broke from from a duct tape bond, pulled his pistol and killed Michael Sams of Chicago. Forsyth says the nature of armed and violent crime precipitates retaliation with lethal force. The manager used a registered concealed weapon he was licensed to carry, and may have wounded one of the others escaping after the gunplay. Any leads on the armed robbery incident can be passed along to the Grand Rapids Police Major Case Team or Silent Observer."

I'm glad he saved his life and the lives of his co-workers.

The thing that is disturbing to me is (other than the way criminals act), the story talks about his bravery one minute, but the next it complains about how many law abiding citizens are taking their safety into their own hands.

Taking safety into one's own hands? IMO, 100% of people everywhere have their own safety in their own hands, though few choose to take responsibility for that fact. It isn't the police officer 2-20mins+ away. Isn't the armed protector from dial-a-prayer. If only everyone would do this for themselves, we'd have 1% of the "person" crimes on the street that we do.

3900 people with concealed carry permits is a lot? Shoot... down here, you could probably find more than that in a shopping mall on an average Saturday...

Well compared with the 200 in 2000 it is - and also, how big is Kent County!

My county is approx 50,000 only and working on a PA averaged CCW uptake of 6.75% then we might only have 3375 in the county - altho I suspect the number is well higher here.

Certainly here some better reporting for a change.

Well, according to the census.gov website, Kent County has a population of about 596,666 ('05 estimate). So 3900 permit holders would mean only 0.65% of the county's population has a permit, or 1 in 153.
