It may be true that the homeowners were involved in some illegal activity, that is, selling Marijuana, but the kid engaged in some armed robbery and paid the price. Plastic gun or real gun, no matter, armed robbery is what it is.
The comments on the article are saying this kid was more of a victim than those he was attempting to rob, so how's that? He was on the beginning of the path to destruction, and it came a bit early. Sad to say but it might be good that his criminal career was cut short.
The kid should not have been involved in stuff like that, he made some choices that ended up with deadly consequences.

This could become a problem in a legal SD shooting in some States since in Tx it states
(d) The use of deadly force is not justified under this subchapter except as provided in Sections 9.32, 9.33, and 9.34.
(e) A person who has a right to be present at the location where the force is used, who has not provoked the person against whom the force is used, and who is not engaged in criminal activity at the time the force is used is not required to retreat before using force as described by this section.
(f) For purposes of Subsection (a), in determining whether an actor described by Subsection (e) reasonably believed that the use of force was necessary, a finder of fact may not consider whether the actor failed to retreat.

Thank God these idiots brought "fake gun" to a gunfight.
Too bad that they all didn't take hits.

I really get tired of all the crap about "He was such a good boy and he was going to college and he was just turning his life around and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, yada, yada, yada, ad naseum"!!! All the "good boys" who get shot while commiting a home invasion or a robbery are NOT good boys! If they were so "good", they wouldn't be doing what they were doing when they got shot!!! I have NO sympathy for any of them. It's just too bad the other scumbags didn't suffer the same fate as the one who got himself dead. Now the taxpayers have to support, feed, and cloth these scumbag "good boys" for several years.
