According to the police report, Lanier said he was driving along State Road 17 North when the dog kicked "the unloaded .380 pistol." It went on to say that Lanier was "surprised" to learn not only that the gun was loaded, but also that it was actually a 9mm weapon, not a .380.

That was the problem. His .380 was unloaded. The 9mm was not.

and why was this firearm not secured in the cab of the truck? Is his dog going to retrieve it for him when he needs it in 0.63 seconds? Moron.

The dog is under further investigation after it was discovered that he whispered, "And this is for having me neutered!" right before the shot was fired.

I didn't need to get any further than the gun was on the floor of his vehicle. The guy is lucky he or someone else was not hurt worse.

No doubt the dog was in fear for its life. So is this an accidental discharge or was the dog simply negligent?

It appears to be a Florida thing, possibly having something to do with the drinking water. Last week, a young woman in St Petersburg was shot by her oven while attempting to make waffles.

More likely too much sun. Too many won't drink the water here.

Sounds like another responsible gun owner, unsecured firearm just laying around on the floor of a pickup and the owner doesn't even know the caliber of the "unloaded" firearm, gun must of bought it's own ammo.
IMHO it's idiots like this that need their privileges revoked until they complete a firearms safety course and prove they can handle andstore a firearm safely
