A local pizza delievery guy in Charlotte recently defended himself and pulled his pistol when being robbed. Now, he placed the BG in the hospital and he survived but. He also sprayed several apartment buildings in the process. An interviewed resident said the guy was just pointing and shooting. Dangerous business, if you carry you must practice. But glad he is ok.
Well yeah - sure glad he was OK but - ''spray and pray''?? No - not the way to go at all.
I reckon most of us here with even just ''adequate'' training, with our chosen carry pieces - would have more hits than misses plus maybe even if circumstances permitted, have some awareness of rule #4.
I guess adrenaline will win the day but adequate training should preclude what this sounds like. As ever tho and in fairness - ever so hard to judge without loadsa facts re the actual incident.
When the survival instinct kicks in - who knows how well or badly training will do what it's meant to.
Heck, I can remember just during this last year, an incident where a whole 'pack' of cops had the BG cornered...of the first 80-90 shots fired, none hit the BG. Then, as the BG tried to drive away, he WAS wounded, but not killed. Lots of shots hit everything around...no one but the BG was injured.
It seems easy to give advice, but when things quickly go from 'all's quiet' to 'all hell's breakin' loose'...it just might be a little more difficult to practice what we preach.
I would also assume that there's not much 'thinking time'...just reaction time (hopefully, there is SOME muscle memory).
Hope I'm never in that situation...

Training is a must! Not just practice.........You practice what you've trained in and then practice some more.
If you are carrying and you have no formal training you are short changing yourself and possibly others. A trainer will tell you that no matter the skill level you are at you will only be at 50% of that skill level in a SHTF situation.
I guess - 50% of no training = shooting and spraying apartments while defending yourself.:aargh4:

I can just hear the lawyers and anti's now! Thank God nobody in the other apts was hit. Practice, train, practice, train and then repeat!
It probably wasn't a great one....but.....I'm sure that he lost the job he had.
There was an incident a few years back where a Domino's store empleyee protected his stores cash drawer with his own weapon...........and was subsequently fired for his troubles.

I agree with Ret, I don't think that the average joe, even with alot of practice, can/will avoid a stray shot if/when something like this happens. Especially if the BG is moving.
I just hope that at least my first and second shots hit (since I practice one shot to double taps the most) and hope, pray, that it removes the threat (one way or the other).
And, as was mentioned, there have been many (too many perhaps?) cases of where the LEO's have fired a mulitude of shots and have scored very few hits.

While in an actual shooting no one knows for cartain how they will react, mental preparation and training are a must and Retsup is right about muscle memory being important as well.
A few things I remember from my Corps Values training that might help some of the newer folks. Even though they seem so obvious, it is important to have them drilled into your thought process. I often repeat these montras in my head while training or practicing.
1. Bullets don't go where you will them, only where they are aimed.
2. The goal is One shot, one kill. (to that I add, shoot again if they're still moving)

For me, that means, the bottom line is, I don't care WHAT you are after. The moment I am presented with deadly force, I must choose to flee, or, meet force with force. And, if it's a firearm again, well, until I can run at 800+fps, unfortunately, it won't likely be 'flee'.....
Plenty of cashiers have been shot after complying with a thief's demands.
