    Greedy dumb criminal

A robber used a lighter resembling a pistol to steal a man's wallet -- only to be shot by his victim, who was armed with a gun that was real.

On Nov. 8, Miami police say, Wells was driving a white Dodge when he pulled up to the car of Patrick Laguerre on Northwest 75th Street and North Miami Avenue at about 12:20 a.m. He asked for directions.

As Laguerre was responding, Wells pulled out a nickel-plated lighter made to look like a gun.

Laguerre gave him some loose dollars, ''but [Wells] wanted more,'' according to a police report. Wells searched his pockets, fished through his wallet and got back into his own car.

    But the wallet was empty.

Wells ''became irate, aiming the handgun at the victim, stated he was going to shoot,'' the police report said.

Laguerre took cover back in his own car, grabbed his own handgun and squeezed off three to four rounds.

Mortally wounded, Wells tried driving off. He crashed into a fence. While at Jackson Memorial Hospital, he was charged with armed robbery.

But Wells died on the Thanksgiving holiday -- delivering Miami homicide detectives a fresh case. Their investigation of the shooting is now under way.

''It seems the victim was defending himself,'' said Miami homicide Sgt. Jose ''Pepi'' Granado.

Don't they mean "became irate, aiming the lighter at the victim" in the above statement? Or they could have said aiming the nickel plated lighter made to look like a gun. I don't think it was a handgun, right, or did I miss something? Again, the news, and in this case the police report, is so poor to properly word the written words they try to convey. A proofread is all it takes to catch a couple of errors.

Moral - do NOT threaten a CCW with seeming lethal force - with anything!

Lighter, BB - same against cops too - perception of threat is everything and consequences will be dire.

Another "dead turkey" on Thanksgiving Day. Looks like the average IQ in Miami just went up.

I think they did fine. As far as the victim was concerned, it was a handgun, not a lighter. So, in effect, that is what happened as far as a potential jury is concerned. Also, it seems that the story correctly identified the victim as the person being robbed, not the person who was shot.

So, with all due respect, I would not be so nit picky when whoever wrote this seems to have gone to some effort to cast CCW in a positive light.

I see now. I was misunderstanding the story. It is a bit awkward in my opinion.

Having just moved to Miami 6 months ago, I'm finding this to be all too 'unsurprising'. This happened only a half mile from my home which is in a nice neighborhood. Two weeks ago, while downtown at work, I helped to stop a knife fight on the street.

Over a half million CCW's in FLA and it's really not enough!

Miami Homicide is always on the show "First 48 Hours" on A&E every thursday night. Real life Homocide investigations in the first 48 hours after the murder.

If anyone else watches this show I'm sure you know how dumb criminals can be and how easy they are caught. If you don't watch it you should. It's an addicting show.
