We could ask him? Probably not an option....

But what if as he comes out the house door, leading with the muzzle? grab the barrel... now he's running for his life. out the door?

This guy according to neighborhood reports may have thwarted a similar gas robbery at a neighbors... maybe he, with shotgun in hand, was feeling a bit invincible..? We'll never really know.

This is why every long gun user should have a sling. It goes a long way to help weapon retention and not used against you.

I had a neighbor once who kept hunting rifles and shotguns in his garage in a locker not a safe. Maybe this guy was another trusting soul.

With the cops being pretty mum on the issue and given his career, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't actually interrupt a burglary. If only there were more details, perhaps we could learn something from this tragic event.

The anti's are raging on in the comments about how dangerous owning a gun is, no surprise there. It's not taking the time to learn how to employ and retain your weapon that's dangerous.

I read it as he interrupted the theft - as in the shotgun may have been in the garage and the murderer found it there. This could be a very sad example of why guns should be kept in a safe when not in use.
