    Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.

    Sixto should start an orientation class to be taught to all seventh or eighth graders on how to make it to retirement.

    In Gibson v. Commonwealth, 237 Ky. 33, 34 S.W.2d 936 (1936), the High Court stated:  [I]t is the tradition that a Kentuckian never runs.   He does not have to.

    This family has had enough bad in their life already. The reason the boy was living with his grandparents is his dad was shot and killed at work a few years back.

    There are really no winners here, only ones with better outcomes. Sad that a 14 year old has taking a life on his mind as well as all the rest.

    According to NC law, the Grandpa could be charged with not locking his gun up to keep it out of the hands of a minor.

    I hope that he is not charged as I would think that lawful self-defense would override this silly law in NC.

    Only if they find that the shoot of the home invader wasn't justified. The law only applies to when a minor uses a gun in a crime.

    There is even a specific clause that covers self defense usage.

    14-315.1. Storage of firearms to protect minors.

    (a) Any person who resides in the same premises as a minor, owns or possesses a firearm, and stores or leaves the firearm (i) in a condition that the firearm can be discharged and (ii) in a manner that the person knew or should have known that an unsupervised minor would be able to gain access to the firearm, is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor if a minor gains access to the firearm without the lawful permission of the minor's parents or a person having charge of the minor and the minor:

    (1) Possesses it in violation of G.S. 14-269.2(b);

    (2) Exhibits it in a public place in a careless, angry, or threatening manner;

    (3) Causes personal injury or death with it not in self defense; or

    (4) Uses it in the commission of a crime.

    (b) Nothing in this section shall prohibit a person from carrying a firearm on his or her body, or placed in such close proximity that it can be used as easily and quickly as if carried on the body.

    (c) This section shall not apply if the minor obtained the firearm as a result of an unlawful entry by any person.

    (d) "Minor" as used in this section means a person under 18 years of age who is not emancipated. (1993, c. 558, s. 2; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 14, s. 11.)

    What a convoluted law.

    It is against the law to leave your firearm unsecured to where a minor can get hold of it yet if a minor does get it and has to use it, it is not illegal.

    I think it is a stupid law because if they had been following that law, the grandma and teen possibly would have been dead.

    The laws doesn't REQUIRE you to lock up any guns, it only makes it where if you don't secure it and your child uses it illegally then you can get a charge too. That makes it the parent or guardians responsibility to either train the minor how to use a firearm and when it's permissible to use it. If they don't take the time to train the minor then lock it up.

    The law just makes it the parent or guardians choice as to how much you trust the minor.

    new news on this case I read yesterday. It appears someone unknown has taken a few shots at the house. Presumably friends or family of the deceased in retaliation.
