Woman shoots burglar after in-home attack

CLINTON, La. (AP) — A Clinton area woman shot and killed a man who beat and stabbed her after breaking into her house early Wednesday, an East Feliciana Parish Sheriffs Office spokesman said.
Det. Don McKey said Arthur Sanford, 44, of Clinton, died from a gunshot wound suffered during a struggle with the woman around 2:20 a.m.
It happened on Plank Road, south of Clinton, McKey said.
Sanford had apparently crawled into the home through a fireplace wood box that opens inside and outside the house, McKey said. The woman was treated at a hospital for her injuries and released.
Former Army Infantry Captain; 25 yrs as an NRA Certified Instructor; Avid practitioner of the martial art: KLIK-PAO.

When we are securing our homes and businesses, we have to look for all possible entry points. I used to be a locksmith and found that most people will lock their doors and occasionally their windows, but don't consider other openings into the building, such as;
Old/Current Freight elevators or doors
Old coal chutes
Cellar doors
Attic windows
Second story windows
Doggy doors
Garage to House doors
Porch to House doors or windows
The little window that nobody could fit through (BG's do!)
Any door with a window in it or near it, is almost as bad as a key under the welcome mat.
In this area, I see a lot of people who leave their big garage door open about about 12 inches for the dog or cat to get in at night. This also allows BG's to slide in, close the garage door and take their time choosing just the right tool (from your neatly organized tool rack) to either destroy the lock, spread the door frame or attack the door itself.
As Betty found out, Bad Guys can be quite determined, so we should also have a good alarm system and use secondary security measures such as a gun safe.
I hope that I didn't hi-jack this thread, but we need to pay attention to how Bad Guys are getting in. Make it too much work or risk to enter our homes and the BG's will usually look for an easier target.

Yup, I like to hear these kinds of stories, too. They always seem to get less press than when the situation goes the other way....
