Pregnant St. Paul Mother Shoots Assailant
Lisa Kiava
Reporting
(WCCO) St. Paul A Twin Cities family had something extra to celebrate this Easter weekend.
A St. Paul mother, eight months pregnant, defended herself and her toddler against a robber who entered the family convenience store claiming to have a gun.
Susana Khalil was behind the counter Saturday while her husband Joe Khalil ran an errand. While he was gone, a woman entered the store pretending to have a gun in a bag.
The store surveillance tape shows the suspect aggressively confronting Susana while her 2-year-old daughter sits nearby.
"She walked to just right to her quick ... and went to attack her right away," said Joe. "My wife has a big stomach like this, she's eight months pregnant."
The two women struggled briefly at the counter. According to Joe, Susana was likely fighting for the safety of her children.
When the suspect appeared to move toward their daughter, Susana shot the suspect in the shoulder blade, near the collarbone.
She had never fired a gun before.
"My wife (has) probably never seen something like that except on TV," said Joe. "For defending her family ... she is a hero. She is my hero, actually."
Darleen El Bassar, a family friend, said she was likely acting out of maternal reflexes: "If something is happening to your baby, you get fast, you get quick. Your motherly instinct kicks in, that's it."
The suspect was in stable condition at Regions Hospital Saturday night and is expected to make a full recovery, which gives the Khalil family some comfort.
Susana suffered minor scrapes on her hands, and her daughter is distraught, but all signs indicate their unborn child is fine following the attack.
"She's not a tough lady ... she proved it that's she's tough yesterday," said Joe. "But she's not a tough lady, she's a soft lady."

Good for her!
Too bad that her first shot had to be at another human being but good for her for using that first shot in self defense!

Sounds like she did right. I would think the "suspect" will have a hard time on the womens' floor of the prison after going at a child.

My wife is the same way. We call her mamma bear at those times. She acts like a momma bear does to protect her cubs.

This is a perfect argument for why more women should arm themselves. Imagine what could have happened if she was not armed, there could have been a dead unborn child, 2yr old , and a mother. I think if I worked in a convenience store I would have at minimum an M60 mounted under the counter and a sawed off shottie strapped to my back Army of Darkness style.

+1 for a bit of luck. At least she didn't hesitate, but hopefully she hits the range now.

I'm proud of her for that, but in a sense this makes me think about all the gun hating women I run into. I then try to explain to them everybody has a breaking point, they say "no" I will not shoot somebody. Then I bring up their kids, "I will KILL you"
Exactly.

This is just my humble opinion based on nothing in particular but I think this is a situation where her husband put a gun under the counter and nobody was trained to use it properly. While I am glad they exercised their right to self protection on their property I wish more of these convience store people would get some training. I am also glad she didn't hesitate to use the one thing available to her for protecting both herself and her children
