Carjacking thwarted by 17 year old

METAIRIE, La. -- A 17-year-old boy foiled an attempted carjacking, wrestling a gun from a would-be robber and shooting him after the man grabbed his mother, authorities said.

Carl Chestnut, wounded in the head and torso, will face armed robbery charges once he is released from East Jefferson General Hospital, Col. John Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Monday.

The 53-year-old woman, whose name wasn't released, and her son were in the drive-through line at an Arby's Roast Beef Restaurant early Monday when Chestnut, 44, walked up and pointed a gun at her, demanding their money and the car, Fortunato said.

When he leaned inside, trying to yank the mother out of the car, the 17-year-old grabbed the gun, Fortunato said. He said it went off once as they struggled, but did not hit anyone. Once the youth got the gun, he shot Chestnut several times, Fortunato said.

Sylena Rhodes, a corporate officer for Arby's, said, "He saved his mother's life. He's a hero. He's an absolute hero."

While acknowledging the gamble succeeded, authorities stressed that it's safer to cooperate in such a case.

"Give them the money and give them the keys," Sheriff Harry Lee said. "You make an insurance payment on your car, and nobody gets shot."
I wonder if Harry Lee would simply give the Chestnut the money, keys and whatever else and plead for mercy? Or just expect others to become victims.

Congratulations to the quick thinking teenager.

It's funny how some say that if you carry a gun, it'll be used against you if and when you're attacked by a criminal. In this case it was the exact opposite. The criminal had his gun used against him. Props to the teen who gave that scumbag what he deserved!

I wonder if he'd be prepared to issue a written guarantee on that?! Kid sees his Mom at gunpoint ....... and has no way of knowing the BG's intentions. ''Just give in''. Right.

Great plan, maybe the BG would have let the kid watch as he raped his mom or maybe killed her

Yep, just give them have your money, car and wife. For 40 years it was US policy to "just give them" the airplane. Worked so well on 9/11; for the terrorists, that is.

It's a good example of how quickly one can be disarmed, when within contact distances. We should take the lesson and run, though: Keep yourself at sufficient distance, when encountering a BG, if at all possible.

    Drive thru vulnerability

Bad spots to be in, those drive-thrus. Can't drive off easily and often cannot even open driver's side door. Always seemed like an inviting target for a potential BG, to me.
That kid's got the tiger in him. Kudos to him for being proactive and not simply trusting the <sarcasm>"possibly benevolent and as yet undemonstrated benign intentions of the gun-wielding perp".</sacrasm off>

Drive-thrus increase the importance of spacing between vehicles, and ground clearance. I always try to leave myself an exit; even if it means going over the curb.

Tough call...this could of turned uglier as well with the gun going off when the kid grabbed it. Glad it didn't. Sounds like the kid knew a thing or two about guns.
