    Homeowner stops home intrusion

This is from the Goldsboro News Argus.

Home invasion ends in man's death
DUDLEY -- Three armed intruders stormed into a family's home on Old Mount Olive Highway during a home invasion this morning, but one of the robbers never made it out alive.

A man, his girlfriend and their four children, ages, 4, 5, 5 and 8, were asleep in their beds at 2546 Old Mount Olive Highway when three men barged into their mobile home after kicking in the front door.

The men rounded up the occupants whose names have been withheld at officials' request and held them at gunpoint while they ransacked the home searching for money.

None of the occupants were injured during the home invasion.

But the encounter took a fatal turn when one of the gunmen opened fire.

The male resident then reached for his own handgun and returned fire, Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said.

"One of the intruders was shot while the others escaped in a dark-colored vehicle," Winders said. "The intruder that was shot was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS."

The suspect was identified as Antione Logan Chestnut, 19, of Dudley.

Today's death marks the 13th fatal incident in Wayne County this year.

Winders said the residents in the home didn't know the intruders. He added that drugs are not believed to be involved.

Wayne County sheriff's deputies responded to the home at about 12:30 a.m. Detectives worked through the night taking crime scene photos, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses and neighbors in the area.

Wayne County EMS responded to the scene and officers from the Mount Olive Police Department were called to assist.

Meanwhile, officers had to work hard to console family members of the suspect who was killed in the home invasion.

Officials say they are thankful the incident didn't end in more bloodshed.

"We had four children in there, and we are fortunate that no one was injured or killed during the exchange of gunfire," Wayne County sheriff's Maj. George Raecher said.

I like this fellow's mentality. He really means no one innocent was injured or killed, but says it in such a way that it comes across as no one of consequence. I like that.

    Three intruders?

Officials say they are thankful the incident didn't end in more bloodshed. What? There should have been MORE bloodshed...two more intruders.

i agree whole heartedly, console the children who were forced to see their father take action with deadly force. that must have been devastating.

Maybe the kids have been brought up right, and rather than needing consoling, they were like, "AWRIGHT, DAD! Good shootin'!!"

    For all we know...

But I'm right there with ya -- why should police man-hours be wasted consoling the kin of the criminal? Screw 'em.

Nice to see everyone so concerned over their well-being. Names protected, but address divulged in the newspaper. Whew! They're safe, now.

Seriously, though: good reactions by the defender. Time to consider a slightly stronger barring of the door.

This fellow did a good job of protecting his family. He is to be commended and his example followed by all of us.

I wish him and his loved ones well. I hope that this ordeal has not emotionally scarred the children for life but at least they have the knowledge that their father is a real man and he protected their lives when it was needed.

Dudly, NC is just south of Goldsboro and has always been known for its rough elements. We have been quite lucky in the past few years - we have a good sheriff and a good sheriff's department. The area has a large number of hispanics and blacks and they are usually involved in this type of crime, but not exclusively - some mean rednecks also live in the area.

    Hey Hey !!

Should have been 3 blood trails leading from the home. Right out into the yard, where they would find the bleeders, laying in a mud puddle. Cops had a hard time making the dead piece of garbage's family feel better? AW SHUCKS, he is where he is destined to be. Worm food. Hope the kids don't have many bad dreams in the future.
A person is justified in the use of deadly force, if such person reasonably believes deadly force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to such person or a third person.

In our politically correct world, the family of the deceased scum bag needs to be hugged and told that is not their fault their deceased son turned out to be a predator. Something is wrong here.

What gets me is the stark contrast to what transpired in Connecticut where the doctors family was slaughtered.

And yet so many left thinkers feel whole heartedly that GUNS are not the answer!

That just flies in the face of logic and common sense!

How can they stand there with straight faces and say the people in this case should not have had a gun in the house with 4 small children present.

I tell ya what... good thing the guys defensive gun wasn't locked in the safe!

The man used good tactics in dealing with 3 armed home invaders and held his cool until one of them started shooting first. Waiting for his chance with feigned compliance until it was clear that deadly force was justified!

Of course some of this is based on assumptions on my part based on the news story reported here.

    Still, good job!

Every time the doctor in Connecticut reads a story like this, it's got to kill him a little bit more. I can only think that he is but an empty shell of a man.

A sad day for him no doubt, but a day that can teach lessons to those who mistakenly hold on to the lies that a gun is pure evil and has no place in a civilized society. Especially when contrasted with a story like the one here.

At least two millions times each year law-abiding citizens in this country thwart crime with the use of a firearm. Its a no-brainer guys, more guns equal less crime.

A gun in the home did not prevent this crime, but it did thwart it and prevent its succesful conclusion. We'll never know if this experience knocks some sense into the other two intruders, or if they'll continue with their criminal ways (after a long time in prison for this attack).

I'm sure this a reporter's use of language.

I suspect the police spent time trying to keep the thuglet's family from engaging in revenge.

Just because a thug was killed doesn't necessarily mean its his family's fault either. There are a lot of thugs who come from decent families.
