GRAND RAPIDS -- A well-known local photographer shot an intruder to death early Monday morning when the man broke into the gallery, according to police.
About 12:30 a.m. Monday, people who live in apartments above the photography shop on Division Avenue just north of Cherry Street heard breaking glass and a popping sound, and called 911.
Detectives say a man smashed the front window to get in, waking up the business owner who lives just behind the shop.
Allen Stevenson, 43, of Muskegon Heights confronted the owner, Jeff Dykehouse, who then allegedly shot the intruder. Stevenson was dying on the floor when police arrived on scene and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Dykehouse is a well-known Grand Rapids photographer who spearheaded "Emily's Big Picture Project." Dykehouse photographed pediatric Hospice patients free of charge. He lost his own child to leukemia.
Grand Rapids Police Captain Jeffrey Hertel said, "When officers arrived, the individual was inside the business, lying inside the front door. There's broken glass, so there's some indication there was some type of break-in."
Police have not determined how many gunshots were fired and have been talking with people who live nearby. A gun has been recovered.
A neighboring artisan says the gallery's owner has been targeted before.
Stevenson previously was convicted for breaking-and-entering, possessing burglar tools, and receiving and concealing a motor vehicle.

This is interesting in the fact that an artist has a gun and acctually used it for self-defense. I would guess that most artists are pretty liberal and anti-gun for the most part. Good for him.

As it has been said here before, the BG has merely succumb to the occupational hazard of being a thug.

I'm an artist. There are many that are liberal, some are anti gun. Others are like me. It is a hard group to pin down.

The photographs taken of the BG won't be very pretty and he'll never get to see them.

There are many types of artists and liberals. Folks create many fine works also carry guns. Heck look at all the fine holster makers here. You may be suprised how many "liberal" gun owners we have here as well.

Sui-juris, that's Ice-T! Who are you trying to fool?!
Still trying to figure out what "rights" animals are supposed to have, but I am just glad that this artist -- who had been victimized before -- was able to put a criminal dog out of his misery. That's one animal who had abdicated his own right to life.
With any luck, the photographer won't have to deal with legal ramifications for protecting himself.

He ultimately assumed both the risks and the consequences, in this case. Forcibly, as it turns out. If he had actually thought about it, perhaps his choices would have been different.
Still, the homeowner's alive and the BG's stopped. It's the proper result.

Looks like the deceased perp did not intend to turn his life around and become a brain surgeon or airline pilot. The gene pool is cleaner.
