Drive up thief foiled by intelligent clerk

    Foxnews.com is reporting:

STONE LAKE, Wis. A man who went to a northwoods bank's drive-up window demanding money fled on his camouflage-colored all-terrain vehicle after the teller held up candy suckers and said that's all she had, authorities said.

Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle of the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department said the attempted robbery of the Stone Lake Bank was reported at 4:16 p.m. Monday.

Zeigle said the suspect, who wore camouflage clothing and a black helmet and face mask, told the teller he wanted all the money, while showing her a bag that he said contained a bomb.

But the teller informed him the money had already been removed from the till and all she had was the candy.

That's when he fled in frustration.

Sawyer and Washburn county deputies searched the area without locating the suspect.

He remained at large Monday night, according to a Sawyer County dispatcher who declined to give his name.

Zeigle's news release did not name the teller.

Zeigle's news release did not name the teller.
A step in the right direction.

The teller is lucky the frustration didn't boil over into an immediate shooting. So many such situations end in carnage, these days.

I would hope the bank has bullet proof glass there?

I seriously doubt that the teller window was not bulletproof.
I hope she smiled when she offered the guy a sucker.

The drive-up teller window at 4:15 would not have been the only opening to the building. I'm under the assumption that the walk-in door was just a few dozen yards from the drive-up window. Someone claiming to rob a bank should be perfectly capable of coming in through the front door. Still, this guy appears to have chosen a drive-up quickie and likely would not have properly cased the place to know whether there was a security-type door, armed guards, and so on.

how many camouflage colored ATVs are sold in Wisconsin anyway? I would bet the guy used his own vehicle to ride up to the teller drive up window. the BG did not even get the lollipops -- that sucks!

I don't know about that, least not around here. Pretty much every bank in this county closes their doors at 1600 M-W, but keep their drive-throughs open until 1630. If he were dealing with that situation....yeah, he's still pretty dumb.
