Aussie news outlet tries to link gun ownership to crime
How exactly is he gun-wielding, and why is that an issue?
A GUN-WIELDING Catholic priest at the centre of an investigation into child pornography has continued his association with the Church.
Father Tony Pearson agreed to stand aside 12 months ago from his chaplaincy at the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry when the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide became aware of a police investigation following from information provided to the the Mulligan inquiry. As part of that investigation, police raided Father Pearson's office at the Otherway Centre, allegedly uncovering pornographic material and weapons photographs taken in Afghanistan.
The weapons pictures have been referred to the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
Despite agreeing to stand aside pending the outcome of the police investigation, Father Pearson has continued his association with the centre, mounting presentations displaying photographs of his trips to Afghanistan.
Staunch parishioners refuse to believe allegations against Father Pearson.
Monsignor David Cappo and Archbishop Philip Wilson have been briefed about the investigation.
A request to speak to Monsignor Cappo yesterday was referred to the Catholic Communications media unit. "We cannot comment as the police are investigating and have asked us not to comment," spokeswoman Elizabeth Hook said.
No charges have been laid despite the lengthy investigation and images allegedly found on an office computer used by Father Pearson.
Inspector Mark Trenwith of the Pedophile Task Force would not say yesterday if any claims had been substantiated.

I could probably search the cache on my 65 year old mom's computer and come up with 'pornography', after all, she's on the internet, and has a public email account... I suppose the author has never received pornographic spam?
allegedly uncovering pornographic material and weapons photographs
What, exactly, is wrong with having photographs of weapons? I'd bet tons of cash that the newspaper reporting this story has a photo repository somewhere that's simply loaded with photographs of weapons!
Did the priest do anything wrong? I don't know... and this article sure as heck isn't going to tell you. If the guy is guilty of child pornography, lock him up and throw away the key. If he's not, publicizing what may end up being perfectly innocent activities should leave the paper liable for slander.
Why do papers publish stories when they don't know the facts? Accusations on page 1, acquittals on page 17, right?
Liberty is an inherently offensive lifestyle. Living in a free society guarantees that each one of us will see our most cherished principles and beliefs questioned and in some cases mocked. It's worth it.

Hmmm, if pictures of weapons taken in Afghanistan will get you investigated, how do any news agencies exist in Aus?
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
