    Grandpa to the rescue!

Man shoots and kills fleeing burglar
He came to rescue grandson who was alone during break-in.

A Powell man coming to his grandson's rescue shot and killed a fleeing burglar Saturday, authorities said.

Tilvis Coffey, 42, of Knoxville died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knox County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Martha Dooley said. His record shows an "extensive" criminal history, including arrests for theft, aggravated burglary and probation violation, she said.

Officers haven't filed any charges against Harry Smith, 58. Smith, who has a gun permit, shot Coffey once in the head with a revolver as Coffey ran from the house at 103 Copeland Road, Dooley said.

Coffey didn't have a weapon at the time, she said.

Coffey showed up at the house just after noon while Smith's 14-year-old grandson was there alone, Dooley said.

"A man came to the door he didn't know," she said. "He called his mother, who told him to hide in the closet."

Coffey kicked in two doors and made his way inside, Dooley said. The boy called 911 from the closet. Meanwhile, his mother called Smith, her father. Smith, who lives nearby, headed to the house and confronted Coffey inside, Dooley said.

Coffey ran out just as the boy's grandmother stepped out of her car, Dooley said.

"Smith told the man to stop or he'd shoot," Dooley said.

She said she didn't know how far away Coffey was when Smith fired.

The boy and his grandmother weren't hurt, Dooley said. Their names weren't available Saturday night, and Smith couldn't be reached.

Good on grandpa One shot to the head at a moving target, impressive.

Based on the BG's extensive criminal history, I think the world is definitely better off without this guy.

Yet again the media releases the address and names of the victim's. Will they ever figure out that this is a bad idea? Probably not until there is some retailiation and the paper/newstation gets slapped with a huge civil suit/jury award.

Bravo Zulu Gradnpa....Glad he was nearby.

Me thinks there will be extra spoiling going on this Christmas
at that household 'cause that's ALSO what Grandparents do.

Now it's time to bring the 14yo to the range.....and raise a ruckus with
    that paper.

Help me here - completely aside from the good shooting and happy ending, what is the justification for shooting a fleeing burglar? Or are we assuming (not without justification) that the press muffed it again and the perp was making a threatening move?

Was the career criminal trying to get away, or was he going after the mom, planning on taking her as a hostage and using the car for his getaway?

    Hey Hey !!

Head shot on a moving target. Great shooting gramps! Didn't do much damage to the dirtbags body, worms have to work extra hard to burrow into the body. Trash had an extensive record. Harry just saved the city and state a lot of money. Instead of wasting that money to feed and house it, the money can now be used to do other things to help the community. Give that man a cigar.

I'm guessing that when Grandpa's Blood Pressure lowered his comments to the Police were that the guy was headed toward Grandma in a threatening manner and after kicking in two doors and terrorizing the 14YOA in the closet Grandpa realized that Grandma's life was more precious than the THUGS. That should be Grandpas story and he should stick to it.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I would bet this was a justified shoot and the press described it as "shooting a fleeing suspect", etc... when in all reality, the threat was still very real.

I wonder if the jury would have seen it differently if this guy didn't have a long criminal history.

I agree with you all, +1 Grandpa for a great example of legally & morally justified gene pool cleanup. We should never think to play God, but when such an opportunity presents itself...

    Peace,
    Pete Zaria.
