A man who was fatally shot while allegedly attempting to rob a west Houston convenience store has been identified as Willie Joseph Roy, 47.

Roy and another man were allegedly attempting to rob a Valero convenience store in the 4000 block of Synott around 2:45 a.m. Friday when the clerk, 38-year-old Doo Byung Park, fatally shot Roy, authorities said. He died a short distance from the store.

Police detained the other suspect, who is being questioned by investigators.

Authorities said that after a struggle at the cash register, Park shot at Roy, who he believed was armed with a handgun, to defend himself.

No charges have been filed against Park, and the case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

The incident was one of two separate fatal shootings at Houston convenience stores that occurred within hours of one another.

The other shooting occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday when two regular customers entered the K.K. Food Store in the 6600 block of Bellfort and found the clerk on the floor near the counter, said Emmett Carstens, an investigator with the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division.

The customers called 911 and emergency personnel arrived, but it was too late. They pronounced the man dead about 11 p.m., Carstens said.

The 23-year-old victim's identity is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

Investigators believe robbery was a motive in the slaying, but Carstens declined to specify what was missing from the store, saying he did not want to jeopardize the investigation.
