Another Home Invasion In A CT Small Town
WTNH.com, Connecticut News and Weather - Man breaks into home and assaults woman
Vernon (WTNH) _ Police in Vernon are looking for a man that used the homeowner's garage door opener to gain access to the home and then he assaulted her.
Police say the incident happened Wednesday night just before 11:30 in the Merline Road area. The suspect used a garage door opener left in an unlocked car to gain access to the house. Once inside, police say he assaulted an older woman who was alone.
She was taken to an area hospital for treatment and later released but police are not saying if the woman was physically and/or sexually assaulted.
Police have not said what, if anything, was taken.
Word of the break-in and assault has neighbors worried.
"I've been hearing it on the news lately. Home invasions everywhere, it's mental. It's hard to believe it goes on everywhere," said Rob Walker of Vernon.
Police say they are working hard to find the suspect.
"It's a quiet area, that whole area is nice and quiet. We've never had any trouble down there," said Ofc. Daniel Champagne. "We are increasing patrols down there for the time being. We are putting officers down there tonight on overtime. We're also canvassing every business in town. We are going to solve this crime."
The suspect is described as a white male with thick accent, possibly Russian.
If you have any information, please contact the Vernon Police Department at 860-872-9126.
I never thought of someone opening a car door and hitting the opener to get in the house. This story should give everyone something to think about.

I figured out to "never" leave a garage door opener in an unlocked car decades ago. The corollary to that is to "always" lock the door between the house and the garage.

Or for that matter to close your garage door period, and lock it...being the wall of a door that it is.
I walk my dog at night and it's amazing how many people do not close their garage doors, leave the light on inside the garage, and leave all manner of valuable items open to the street within the garage.

Right on. Open door, drive out, close door. Open door, drive in, close door.

We've never had any trouble down there
How many times have I heard this - just another reminder that nowhere - but nowhere is immune. All the more reason to stayed armed and vigilant.

This is true. I live maybe five minutes from here, and pass by all the time. It is a peaceful, well-lit area, right down the road from the local PD (literally, maybe 60 seconds down the road).

Exactly. Sadly, many people need to see it happen near them to believe that all of those stories on the news happened near someone else just like them.
We were out of town when this happened, but when we heard, my g/f (who shoots, has a carry permit but doesn't carry) decided she wants to go look at something to carry.
