Off Duty Deputy wounded, shoots 2 in burglary gone bad

    6:37 AM EST, January 18, 2008

An off-duty Daytona Beach police officer is recovering from gunshot wounds in Orlando this morning after a fatal shootout with armed burglars at his Orange County home.

"One suspect was shot and killed, another suspect was shot and injured and another suspect, we believe, is still at large," Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jeff Williams said.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael Chitwood said the deputy, whose name has not been released, was shot in the abdomen and just came out of surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Sheriff's records show the deputy and his pregnant wife arrived at their Villas at Pine Hills home before 11 p.m. Thursday and were confronted by three armed burglars. Investigators with the sheriff's office said the burglars and deputy exchanged about eight shots in front of the home.

Investigators said the 17-year-old suspect died at the scene. The injured 16-year-old burglar is in critical condition at ORMC.

The deputy's wife was not injured in the deadly shootout.

Chitwood was frustrated with the shooting and said "juvenile crime is off the hook."

"These are armed 16-year-old thugs who have no respect for life," Chitwood said. "And you know, tonight, they ran into the wrong person."

Another case of acute victim selection failure.

Hopefully, they'll nab the suspect who fled, so he and his wounded buddy can be charged with the murder of their co-conspirator.

Best wishes to the deputy for a speedy recovery.

Waaaay back when I was a kid, 16-17 year olds might steal a bicycle or shoplift something........guns/shooting involvment was pretty much a rarity. We used to hear that "there is no honor among thieves". Looking back, the thieves back then, were much more "honorable" than this bunch today.

Being 16 sure has come a long way. Used to be that a little beating was all that a 16yr old would dish out, to prove his "honor" to his homies. Now, it's got to be armed robbery or murder for the little gremlins. The poor schmucks are ruining their lives and their family names, such as they are, to say nothing of the harm they are causing to innocents. Do the crime ... and you get what you get.

Kudos to the instincts and ability of the defender for keeping the damage as low as it was. May the murderers rot and be caught/confined soon.

I'm surprised the news printed that and not how the thugs were "fun loving kids who wouldn't hurt a fly". Atleast the officer and his wife are alive and may he recover fully.

any teens that commit a crime that is considered serious at all need to be tried as adults and receive the full penalty of the law.
i hope the deputy gets well soon and his wife fully recovers from the shock of the whole mess.

The sad part is the PD isn't sure if the family could/should move back into their neighborhood (hood being the operative syllable) now that the BG's know he's a cop. He doesn't get take-home privileges so other than this unfortunate incident, nobody would know. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope they catch the third BG (probably 17 with a 3-page rap sheet).

That particular area is notorious for it's criminal element. It's often referred to as "Crime Hills".

Since it's a police officer, the police chief spoke out right away. Newspapers love police chiefs, especially anti-gun ones, but in this case he's mostly pro-officer.

Sounds like a good shoot. I hope the officer recovers soon.

The only thing bad about it is that the deputy got shot. The others are as a result of a robbery gone GOOD!!!!

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Deputy for a speedy recovery.

On another note, can someone please tell me when the media would consider a robbery gone good?????
