    Springfield Man Attacked By Hammer

    By CBS 3 Springfield News

A Springfield man is lucky to be alive after getting hit with a hammer while stopping a burglar.

Henry Birks had one tough morning. Being a former Marine, tough is what he knows and tough is what he is.

Police are crediting him for stopping a burglar from getting away from his neighbor's home on 25 Eton Street.

"There's a guy running out, with items in his hand and I ask,'What are you doing? You don't belong in this house. Stay here,' And he says no, so I kinda blocked him a little bit, and my wife called police," Henry says.

It happened so fast, but Henry vividly recalls what happened next.

"He swung around. It looked like he popped up and had this hammer coming down," Henry says.

    Henry was hit once.

"I couldn't see well anyway, I blood all over my face," he says.

He and the suspect, both fell on the snow-covered lawn, and wrestled for a few minutes until the suspect got away, but he only ran for 10 minutes before police caught up.

"My son comes out of the house, chased him down the street around the corner," Henry says.

He got a good look at the getaway van and it was picked up moments later.

Inside was the suspect, 20 year old, Andy Tran.

Henry's bandaged up from this life threatening attack, but he'll be alright. and he says he'd do it for anyone on his street.

"It's not that we're going to bang on the door for a cup of sugar but we look out for each other," he says.

Glad the police got the guy.

Isn't this the 2nd or 3rd time a thread has started this month about the dangers of hammers in the hands of BG's?
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.

Yes. One of them was in my area, a Seattle woman nearly killed. They now have a suspect but they haven't charged him.

Another was a man killed... somewhere in the mid-west or east coast and I think it was in front of his family.

    Yep, hammers.

BTW the point of impact on his skull may not have killed him but if he were hit hard enough or he'd fallen/been knocked unconcious as a result and hit his head he very easily could suffer permanent irreversable untreatable _brain damage_ to his frontal lobe which heavily impacts personality or occipital lobe which controls sight.
Many people have suffered such brain damage from impacts to the front of the skull damaging either the front or the rear of the brains tissue.

Have you noticed the reporter once again blamed the weapon not the person wielding it. I guess it is only fair that hammers attack people since guns attack people, equal rights for all tools.

I'm sure a followup story will point out that it was an assault hammer.

Neighbors looking out for neighbors, I think that is something we don't see much of these days. The lawyers have scared us all into turning a blind eye to criminal activity. I'm glad Henry will recover and the creep is in custody.

My partner and I were searching a house one time for a scum bag that we knew was inside the house. We would take turns opening closet doors while the other had his weapon trained on the closet. I opened the door and the guy we were looking for was standing right inside the doorway with a hammer drawn back to ready to strike. My partner shot him right square in the nose. End of story.

I suspected it might be a high capacity assault hammer... how can the streets be safe when any Tom Dick or Harry can be walking around with an AH.

I used to work construction (or destruction - tore things down more often than built them), so tended to always had a hammer in my car. Latter in college I tended to have a hammer around as well. My 28oz Estwing (strait clawed) framing hammer could easily be consider an ebh.

What shocks me far more than them being used in crimes, is the pathetic one hit drop rate. I personally always felt that a well swung hammer would be more effective at point blank than a pistol - at work I could easily put the claw of my Estwing through a 2x4 - I can not imagine a hitting a skull having any less penetration - and always felt it could easy rip out a shoulder or break a forearm.

guess bad guys have not realized to put the pointy end forward yet.

They're great for penetrating armor too. It's odd that everyone remembers the sword when the hammer and pike were the weapons of choice against armored opponents.

Did that hammer have a 'shroud'?

Glad the dirtbag is in custody and the neighbor if fine!

Good for this guy to watch out for his neighbors! How many of us wish he'd gone one step more like the guy in texas who shot 2 robbers stealing from his neighbor's house who then came onto his property?
