Ya know my mom sent me a frantic email about this yesterday. She has always been wary about my owning and carrying firearms. She lives outside DC. The poor woman wanted to know if it was common to get animal attacks and if I ever went out there. Obviously she wanted to know if I went armed, too. Part of my response:
"Yeah itll happen and of course I carry out there. Its rare to find an unarmed group that heads into the desert. Usually at least one person brings a sidearm, shotgun or long gun of some kind. When we head out I usually pack my HK and Tony brings his Browning or my 12. Its not just for the big cats, tho. Its not just the four-legged crazies we worry about, tho. Remember how I told you that response times in the backcountry are measured in hours or days? If that guy hadn't had a firearm then that story would have read much differently."
This happened in an area I spend a lot of time in. I'm out in that range looking for stuff all the time (I'm a wreckchaser). Its beautiful country but the cat reinforces how deadly it can be out there.
A shotgun and Berreta storm will be my camping guns for this season. Predators come in many shape and sizes.
Thank God the boy's Uncle was there; Someone needs to send that video to Obama as an explanation of why you never enter wilderness areas unarmed, and why the NRA pushed for this legislation nationally.
"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined". - Patrick Henry
