Ugly: Never Get Out of the Boat (FL)

A 41-year-old Orange County man was shot and killed early this morning after apparently going outside to investigate a prowler, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

At about 3:22 a.m., the Sheriff's Office received a call from a home in the 7200 block of Leighton Way about a prowler in the area. The caller said a man wearing no shirt and blue jeans jumped over his fence into his neighbor's yard. The caller told his neighbor, John Ortiz, about the incident.

Officials said Ortiz apparently went outside to investigate the incident and was shot and killed by an unknown suspect. Leighton Way is located just off South Goldenrod Road.

Agree. You are in a much better position to defend yourself when the BG does not know where you are.

I second that deadeye. Get your 12 gauge out and wait in a safe room if you got one. Call 911 and let the police search your yard. That is what they are trained to do and paid to do.

There seems to be a lot of activity coming out of Orlando lately. It was bad when I left and it's getting worse. I just hope my son can stay healthy until he graduates and leaves town!

Well, he went out to "investigate" and got himself killed instead of getting his curiosity satisfied.

Not such a very successful investigation on that fateful occasion.

This scenario has been played out here many times with people playing the "What if" situation.

I would say most of us say the same thing, "Stay inside your ensconced position and call police. Have your gun handy but stay inside in a defendable position!" Then there is always someone who says, "I'm going outside to investigate... I'm not letting someone prowl around my house, etc. etc..."

Well now here is a real and stark incident that should answer anyones question as to why you don't go outside to do your own investigation.

I hope some people learn from this incident!

    Stay safe, and stay inside!

This is exactly what I was thinking while reading the story.

    Uncommon sense.

Stay in your home behind locked windows & doors, corral your family and dogs (if you have them) into a single secure room, arm yourself, and dial 911.
Observe if you can do so without being sighted and provide 911 information details toward what and who you see.

Going outside into darkness to 'investigate' or confront is not wise.

Just think...if the man had cowered in fear and refused to go outside he would be alive today. Then he could have raised his children to to always look the other way if the face of lawless activity and to understand that there will be bad guys that prey on society and if you leave them alone to practice their craft, then maybe, just maybe they will let you live.

But instead...he didn't do that. He did what most men would do, and that is to investigate. His neighbor called and told him the situation so being a man, he did what he thought was the thing to do.

Unfortunately for him, he did not have the proper mindset and ended up dead because of it.

Don't chastise him for having the balls to investigate, but rather grieve because he did not understand that evil must be met with force if it is ever to be conquered.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

I would've turned on my outdoor lights and watched the backyard from an upstairs window. With my rifle in my hand.
