Homeowner Kills Intruder During Hickory Hill Home Invasion|Eyewitness News Everywhere - ABC24 - CW30 - Memphis TV

Memphis, TN -- A car thief and home invasion robber is dead after a shootout with a homeowner in Hickory Hill.

Memphis police are investigating the homicide in the 3700 block of Hyacinth, near Winchester and Mendenhall.

Investigators say a man who had been breaking into cars on Hyacinth forced his way into a home around 2:30 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2008.

Once inside, the crook got into a gunfight with the homeowner. The intruder was killed and the homeowner was rushed to The Med with a gun shot wound. He is in non-critical condition and preparing to give police a statement.

Police did not know what motive the car thief had for breaking into the home.

The area has been a hot spot for car and home burglaries lately and officers have been focusing on the problem as part of the Blue Crush crime initiative, according to police.

If not for the homeowners Refuse To Be A Victim; Counter-Crime Initiative there may have been a dead homeowner and everyone else in the house.

Police do a great job... the best they can with what they've got. But as we all know all to well... When seconds count, the police are still minutes away!

But as we all know all to well... When seconds count, the police are still minutes away!

Yeah, like about 45 in Memphis. They do what they can but Memphis is very spread out and I'd be willing to be the MPD lacks the amount of officers needed to cover all of it. It's a good thing the homeowner had enough sense not to rely on the system like a lot of people. I'm glad he's alright and there's one less animal prowling Memphis.
