Off-duty Fla. paramedic shot over noisy go-cart dispute

Paramedics have been getting it bad in FL recently.

This one should have heeded my advice:
Be nice to everybody, and don't start arguments. They might be mean enough to shoot you.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. Robert Wood saves lives for a living, so he was worried when he saw a go-kart whiz past his Hollywood home Sunday night.
Wood, 42, a Coral Springs firefighter and paramedic, yelled at the go-kart driver to stop, saying he could hurt himself or someone else.

The go-kart driver, later identified as Ronald Khan, approached Wood.

The two men got into an argument.

Minutes later, the off-duty firefighter was on the ground, shot once in the stomach.

Police and witnesses say Khan, 35, pulled the trigger.

''He's a nut case, a hoodlum,'' said Donald Pruitt, a neighbor and longtime friend of Wood who witnessed the shooting. "He should have never shot Bobby. He didn't do anything.''

Rescue workers rushed Wood to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Officials say the bullet pierced Wood's intestines and kidney, but that he is expected to recover.

A few hours after the 9:19 p.m. shooting, police arrested Khan at his Hollywood home. Investigators say Khan confessed. He was charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm. Police recovered the gun.

He was booked into a Broward jail, but was released on $10,000 bond Monday afternoon.

Those who know Wood say he was likely looking out for Khan's well-being, not looking for trouble.

''He is really more of a problem solver, as opposed to a problem starter,'' said his girlfriend, Jennifer Veasey of Birmingham, Ala. ``He doesn't like to see or hear anyone argue. He steps in to try and help resolve things.''

Wood, a graduate of McArthur High in Hollywood, attended the police academy, but decided he'd rather be a firefighter and paramedic. He volunteered with Coral Springs for three years before the fire department hired him in October 2005.

Wood spent the holiday weekend visiting Veasey and her two children in Birmingham. He flew back to South Florida on Sunday afternoon to have Easter dinner with his neighbors, Donald and Beatrice Pruitt.

Later, Wood and the Pruitts sat outside, chatting under the carport.

Their discussion was interrupted by the loud go-kart something Donald Pruitt says he hears often along his dead-end street in the 500 block of North 60th Way.

''They always come down there fast,'' Pruitt said. "They got no respect.''

According to Pruitt, Wood went out and told Khan he was a paramedic and that riding the go-kart was dangerous.

The two men argued and Wood pushed Khan to the ground, police said.

Khan took off on the go-kart. About 10 minutes later, he walked back to the house with a gun and a group of friends.

Khan, who has a concealed-weapons permit, shot Wood and ran away toward a gray Lincoln Town Car, witnesses told investigators.

Police spent several hours interviewing witnesses, who led them to Khan.

According to public records, Khan has been arrested twice before in Florida on an obstruction-of-justice charge in Fort Lauderdale and a misdemeanor battery charge in Hollywood.

    Both cases were dropped.

Oh, I suspect he's going to be doing some serious time. The aggravated battery is probably just the starter charge.

Oh boy, the media's going to take this to town if indeed he has a CWL.

And I don't understand why he was arrested for aggravated battery instead of attempted murder. It's not like he hit Woods with a wooden baseball bat, he shot him in the stomach point blank.

If he was arrested twice before how in the world did he still have his permit?Even though both cases were dropped the nature of the crimes should have been a red flag to the authorities.

Never mess with someone named KHAN!!. The EMT should have minded his own business. Who is he to preach to a grown man about his own safety. If the noise bothered him he should have called the popo. However, this is no cause to go home, retrieve your weapon and shoot the fool. If he'd kept his head he could have drug the EMT into a courtroom for assault. This is bad for our cause. I'm sure the St. Petersburg Times and a few other liberal rags will be all over this one.

We can help our own cause by writing the rags and the State's Attorney's Office supporting full prosecution of this idiot. I hope the EMT has a speedy recovery.

In Florida, nutty as it sounds, CCW permits are issued and administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Too bad it's not the Florida Department of Law Enforcement instead. Perhaps a direct connection to the FDLE would result in less bureaucratic red tape.

About Concealed Weapons - Division of Licensing, DOACS

I just sent the following e-mail to the Agriculture Commissioner, Charles H. Bronson: commissioner@doacs.state.fl.us

    Dear Commissioner Bronson:

The following news story from March 25th concerns an individual who supposedly holds a Florida Concealed Weapon Permit and who shot a neighbor after a noise dispute. If it is true that this man, Ronald Kahn, 35, of Hollywood, Florida indeed has a valid concealed weapons permit, it makes us all look bad.

    EMS - News

Perhaps a few more e-mails to the Commissioner about this would get someone's attention.

There are a FEW 'crazies' with CCW permits, just as there are some crazy teachers, cops, politicians, postal workers, etc.,...sooner or later, one of these crazies pops up, and he/she should feel the full effect of the 'criminal's justice system'...

    Stay armed...use common sense...stay safe!

Yeah, Florida's a big system with over 600k permits out there. But you sure hate to see something like this.

Here are the latest stats posted on the State's website. Unfortunately a lot of it only deals with Security, PI and Repo:
