Good: Home Invasion In Stillman Valley, Illinois Leaves 1 Dead : MERGED

Autopsy today for 1 Stillman Valley intruder; deputies look for others - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

    STILLMAN VALLEY —

Ogle County sheriff's deputies today are searching local junior high schools and high schools while they seek to identify a young man who was killed after he broke into a rural home near Stillman Valley at 11 p.m. Sunday.

The deceased is 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-7. He weighs about 115 pounds. He is white, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

A man staying at a home in the 9100 block of Meridian Road awakened to the sound of shattered glass and grabbed a handgun after realizing people were inside, Ogle County Sheriff Gregory Beitel said. The man told deputies at least three people broke into the house, one of whom entered his bedroom and then fled, Beitel said.

The houseguest then left the bedroom and came face to face, Beitel said, with a man aiming a firearm at him. The houseguest then fired twice, killing the man, Beitel said.

“He walked out of the bedroom and there was this guy right in front of him, coming out of the other room,” Beitel said. “He fired in self-defense.”

Beitel said it’s too soon in the investigation to know whether the houseguest will be charged with a crime.

He said the deceased man had no identification on him. Deputies recovered a long gun next to the man and a pistol on the floor, several feet from him, Beitel said. Detectives are trying to determine whether those weapons belonged to the man or the homeowner, as they also recovered at least a dozen firearms found around the perimeter of the property.

“At this point, we don’t know whether they brought them with them,” Beitel said. “We know the homeowner was an avid sportsman and had a large collection of firearms.”

Late Sunday, a search party including Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and a helicopter scanned the rural area, which is about 2.5 miles north of Stillman Valley, just south of the Winnebago-Ogle county line.

Investigators also will follow leads in Rockford today, he said.

Beitel would not release the name of the houseguest or the homeowner, but described them both as adult men.

A 5'3" 115# thug entering your home with weapons is as lethal as the 6'6" 300# thug entering your home with weapons...both need to be taken out as quickly as possible.
This 'victim' deserves a reward for saving taxpayers lots of $$$ down the road for court costs, and room and board.

The Sheriff would not release the name of the house guest or the homeowner.

However, can you believe now the site has the address of the victim, a picture of the house, a map how to get there and the information, “We know the homeowner was an avid sportsman and had a large collection of firearms.”

-1 For the homeowner having firearms in his home unsecured.

Another "little angel" commits a robbery with predictable results

Mother of slain 14-year-old asks, 'Why was he there?' - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

Mother of slain 14-year-old asks, 'Why was he there?'

    DURAND —

The last time Kim Britton spoke to her 14-year-old son at 9:30 p.m. Sunday he called to say he loved her and not to worry — he was sleeping over at a friend’s in Rockford.

When Travis Castle didn’t come home to Durand the next morning, Britton became concerned and feared he was in trouble. But she didn’t expect the news she received at 3 p.m. Monday, when Ogle County sheriff’s deputies told her the boy had been killed — shot twice, they said, after he and two other young men broke into a rural Stillman Valley house to steal rifles and shotguns.

Her son, officials said, pointed a firearm at a man staying in the home, who then shot the boy with a handgun. One bullet grazed his neck, while a second, fatal one entered his chest, an autopsy revealed.

On Tuesday, Castle’s family sought answers about why the skinny, sandy-haired eighth-grader died.

“Why was he there?” Britton wondered Tuesday as a parade of media visited her modest home. “What was he thinking? I know Travis shouldn’t have been there. That’s not Travis.”

Pete Castle, the boy’s father, said his son was being influenced by “wrong people,” whom he described as new, older friends in Rockford. Clutching a framed photo of his son on horseback, he said he and the boy had not talked in the three weeks before the shooting. There's a clue!

Sheriff’s officials have questions, too. They have not identified Castle’s two companions, but are trying to find them.

Sheriff Gregory Beitel called the shooting an act of self-defense, and said it was too early to know whether charges would be filed against the man.

“A firearm was pointed at this individual, and he took what he felt was appropriate action to protect himself,” Beitel said. “A 14-year-old can pull the trigger just as easily as an adult can.” Britton, the boy’s father and Travis’ four older sisters said they did not know him to be violent or to cause trouble. His parents said he attended eighth grade at Dolan Center Maryville Farm Campus, an alternative school in Durand, because he struggled with reading.

He would have started high school this fall, and sometimes spent weekends working odd jobs such as roofing and farm work.

Investigators were trying to determine what, if any, relationship the alleged intruders had with the owner of the rural home in the 9100 block of Meridian Road or the houseguest, whose name Beitel would not release pending further investigation. Castle’s parents said their son did not know either of the men.

Illinois law allows people to use deadly force if there’s a reasonable likelihood that deadly force will be used on them. Beitel said others involved in the break-in are also from Winnebago County. Their testimony, he said, will also play a role in the investigation.

“We have nothing at this point to contradict what the houseguest told us,” Beitel said. “He said he fired in self-protection.”

But Castle’s parents expressed doubt about the self-defense argument.
Uh, so the guy craftily lured the angel in, convinced him to pick up a gun, then shot him?

“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” his mother said. Doing the wrong thing.

Why do they always say this? Just once I'd like the parent to say: "Yep my kid was a thug and probably deserved what he got." That would be refreshing.

“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” his mother said. Doing the wrong thing.

And she expected WHAT to happen? He played an adult game and paid a huge adult price...this kid was already on the wrong road, and his trip was cancelled early!

I hate to see another dead kid, but this kid could have easily killed a homeowner...taxpayer $$ saved again!

Anyone roaming around and illegally in someone else's house should expect no less!

I hope the homeowner can put this behind him...
