GOOD: Liquor Store Clerk Fires First - Oakland, CA

Oakland liquor store worker shoots teen robbery suspect

(04-18) 14:45 PDT OAKLAND -- An employee of an Oakland liquor store shot and wounded a would-robber, police said today.

The incident happened about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wah Fay liquor store near the corner of East 21st Street and Eighth Avenue in the city's San Antonio neighborhood, police Sgt. Larry Krupp said.

Two young men entered the store where two employees were working, Krupp said. One assailant had a gun and pushed a clerk.

The other assailant, an 18-year-old Pittsburg man, went behind the counter and took money and was then shot by one of the employees, Krupp said.

The other robber fled, but not before firing a shot at the store as he was running away. No one was hurt by that bullet, Krupp said.

The injured suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland. The wounds did not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said.

The shooting comes at a time of heightened concern over robberies in the East Bay.

Police in Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley are investigating a series of eight takeover robberies at restaurants over the past month. Oakland police are also trying to identify a man they have dubbed the "Chicken Hawk" because of his tendency to rob fast-food restaurants that serve chicken.

The liquor-store shooting also underscores the measures some store employees are taking.

In April 2007, the owner of a pizzeria at 89th Avenue and International Boulevard in East Oakland shot and killed a would-be robber armed with an assault rifle. A month later, a clerk at a liquor store on 28th Avenue in Oakland shot and killed a 17-year-old who had fired first.
    Good for the clerk.

ALL store owners should be shooting back...

Please note: The other robber fled, but not before firing a shot at the store as he was running away...

Another reason for clerks to be shooting as the scumbag decides to leave...just because the thugs is running out, he (the thug) should be thinking about getting shot on his exit instead of being able to shoot...OMO

only problem with that is trying to hit a moving target in a residential neighborhood,if your misses kill an innocent bystander you are going down for manslaughter at the very least, and if you wound an innocent i hope you get ready to write a big check

But, but, guns are BANNED in the bay area. HOW COULD the BG's have them?

More would-be BG's need to get this individualized attention by shop owners.

Some time last year, I figure it's been covered here, but just joined, a clerk at an ice cream store fired at a robber, outside, ended up killing him.
Was charged with all sorts of things, after all is said and done, said clerk doesn't have a record.

Good for the clerk, sounds like employers and employees are getting tired of being human targets for the BG's in Oakland. Too bad the clerk hadn't taken a tactical shooting class, where he would have learned about defending against dual assaults and "sharing" his bullets with both perps!

That may be, but I don't even want to think about his legal expenses.

    "Chicken Hawk"

Not quite a Danny Ocean targeting chicken-serving fast food restaurants.
That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?

#6, Duk, Unless the DA is a twit, the BG is likely to be charged with murder as he was the one comitting the felony that resulted in a death.
