Omaha Teen Soccer Player Shot in Mouth, Gunfiire Reported at Two Schools
These kind of stories are getting all too common.
OMAHA, Neb. — An eighth-grade soccer player was shot and wounded during a game at a middle school Thursday, around the same time that gunfire was reported at an elementary school about a mile away.
Authorities did not know whether the shootings were related but were searching for a suspect in the soccer player's shooting, said Omaha police spokeswoman Darci Tierney. Several people were detained in the elementary school shooting, but no arrests were made.
King Science and Technology Magnet School was briefly locked down after the player was shot. No arrests had been made, Tierney said, and it was not immediately clear where the shots came from or how many were fired.
No one was believed to be injured at the elementary school.
About 100 kids were in and around the middle school about 3:30 p.m. when witnesses saw the boy — a soccer player on the sidelines — bleeding from his face. He had been shot in the mouth and was taken to Creighton University Medical Center; police identified him as 14-year-old Taylor Borgeson.
Tierney said the teen's injuries suggest he was struck by a discharged round that was falling.
Children were kept in the school as police questioned them. Dozens of parents picked up their children after the lockdown was lifted.
"It's kind of a hectic scene," Tierney said.
Steven Bryant, parent of a fifth-grader who attends the school, was on his way home from a job site when he saw a fire truck, ambulance and police cars around the school and "thought the worst."
"I just thought, don't let it be a mass thing," Bryant said. "It's just your worst fear."
In December, police responded to a shooting spree at an Omaha shopping mall. Eight people were fatally shot and three wounded before 19-year-old gunman Robert Hawkins took his own life.
Luanne Nelson, spokeswoman for the Omaha Public School District, said counselors will be available to students Friday.
Parents in the city's largest district were already on edge after threats this week at Westside High School. Officials there said that written threats were found in a school bathroom and that the windows had been shot out of more than a dozen students' cars.
Parents of about 200 students kept their children home from school Wednesday.

Another 'gun-free zone' incident...
One would think that the idea of gun-free zones and people getting shot (or hurt from falling bullets) would begin to 'compute' as being somewhat related...DUH?

It's too bad that everything named after MLK is a disgrace to everything he stood for.

That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?

Would this have been prevented if everyone at the school had been armed? As I read it he was hit by a bullet falling from the sky. Did it say who fired the bullet or from how far away. I know of people that have been killed from bullets fired from over a mile away and there it doesn't matter whether they are armed or not unless the bullet happens to strike the gun.

I don't think it matters whether the school was a gun free zone or not. The students, being minors wouldn't have been able to carry guns. I second the idea that it still wouldn't make any difference in that this was a stray bullet. I don't agree with the title of the article, that the kid was shot. Yes it appears he was struck by a bullet, but that doesn't meet my definition of being shot. Freak accident yes. Was someone negligent in the discharge of a firearm, probably. But this was plain and simple a random accident and had nothing to do with gun free zones or schools for that matter. That is just where the bullet landed from the information provided.
Hope the kid is going to be ok.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Aha, the bad guys are now lobbing bullets at victims from outside the gun free zones because they can't carry there! Quick, bullet free zones!
Gun control can be blamed in part for allowing 9/11 to happen.

Didn't know a falling bullet could do that.....

Hey, they've gotta come down somewhere. If you pull the trigger with the muzzle pointed more than a few degrees over the horizon, any bullet will go quite a ways, and typically have plenty of energy left to wound you when it lands. Or kill you, if it hits in just the right / wrong spot...
