Officials Hunt Man Suspected of Killing DPS Trooper
KELLYVILLE, Texas -- Law enforcement officials on Wednesday continued a multi-county manhunt across East Texas in search of the man they said killed a Department of Public Safety trooper following a high-speed chase Tuesday night.
DPS officials said Brandon Wayne Robertson, 37, shot Trooper James Burns just before 8 p.m. near the intersection of FM roads 1969 and 729 west of Kellyville, about 135 miles east of Dallas.
An official said the 39-year-old trooper was shot after trying to pull over the suspect.
"He saw Trooper Burns indicating that he should stop the vehicle, waving at him. And the guy took off," he said. "And that's when the chase started."
A mile down the road, Roberston, armed with a shotgun, exited his vehicle and fired repeatedly at the trooper, the official said.
"He didn't have time to get out, grab a gun, unbuckle his seatbelt. Nothing," he said.
Officials said a citizen, who came across the scene after Robertson had fled, used the trooper's radio to call a dispatcher and report the incident.
Officials said Burns had been a state trooper for five years, and that he was married and had a 5-month-old baby.
Authorities said Robertson might be driving a 1997 blue Dodge Intrepid with Texas license 039-LCG.
Before Tuesday, 82 DPS troopers had died in the line of duty -- the last on March 14, 2007, when the patrol car of Trooper Todd Dylan Holmes was struck broadside by an 18-wheeler during a pursuit.
My prayers go out to his fellow troopers and family.

I think he picked the wrong state to do that in. They will not put up with that, unlike quite a few other places I can think of.
Perhaps stakes out on a fire ant nest would be a fitting punishment for him!
If he was a leo what made him flip his bean?
