Dead would-be robber had long rap sheet
    By JIM ADAMS, Star Tribune

    May 2, 2008

The armed gunman who was shot and killed with his own gun after he tried to rob a liquor store in Inver Grove Heights was identified today as a St. Paul man with a long rap sheet.

Dwayne A. Curry, 42, died a few hours after the liquor store manager shot him at Trail Liquors on Thursday morning. Curry had taken cash from the register and the two scuffled after the manager grabbed the gun, authorities said. The manager, Matt Huerta, also was shot in the left leg, but was reported in good condition Friday morning at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

State records show Curry has served prison time for nine burglary and theft-related felonies since 1986. He served six years for a 1994 armed robbery in Washington County and was released in 2000, records show. He was booked last fall for burglary and stolen property in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Inver Grove Heights police expect to wrap up the case next week and forward it to the Dakota County Attorney's office for review, said Lt. Jerry Salmey. He said police have obtained surveillance video tapes from the store, which will be reviewed. He said the county attorney could bring charges against Huerta, decline to charge because he acted in self defense or ask a grand jury to consider charges.

"It looks like self defense," he said. "This appears to have been a robbery that went terribly bad. Somebody died that didn't have to."

He said only the suspect's gun was involved.

Salmey said Trail Liquor had been burglarized before, but had no shootings. "That's not common for Inver Grove to have an armed robbery," he said. He said it was fortunate the clerk, who had a minor gunshot would, didn't get more seriously hurt.

"He obviously felt he had to do something and he did it," Salmey said.

Thanks to the liberal justice system, this guy had "nine lives". Is that how many times it takes to rehabilitate a criminal?

Well at any rate the 10th times a charm... At least he wont be a drain on the taxpayers of MN anymore. Too bad it didn't happen sooner.

The innocent citizen is still standing and the BG is not. By almost any standard of justice, it sounds like it went terribly good. Since it's simply not possible for the idiot's family to claim what a "good boy" he was, I'm assuming they'll have the integrity to cover the medical bills and damage to the citizen's store.

Somebody died that didn't have to."
Yes ... he did. After 9 felonies for similar violent robberies, his suicide-by-citizen is simply (and finally) the last in a chain of heinous acts against innocent people. No more. It's about damned time. It's why "Three Strikes" laws came about, to eliminate the possibility of deadly vipers like this walking amongst us.

I agree that the robbery went terribly good. And the BG just never learned, and all that rehab money wasted on him in prison. If he has any assets his estate should have to pay back the state for all the money wasted on rehabiliting him.

My sentiments exactly. Couldn't have phrased it better.

Some scumbag brings a gun into the store... right there he's shown ability and intent.... The fact that the clerk wrestled the gun away from and killed the BG with his own weapon farther proves it was self defense and obviously not premeditated by the clerk...

If any judge or jury lays a finger on this guy, we need to arrange a protest or something. That would just be insane. He deserves a pat on the back and some suggestions on better store security, no more and no less.

    Crazy *BLEEP*'in media.

    Peace,
    Pete Zaria.

I believe in the 3 strikes law somewhat but my version is if you are not rehabilitated after 2 strikes the 3rd one is out like permanently out, lethal injection, bullet to the back of the head, guillotine, hanging whatever way is cheapest ,it will also stop all the prison overcrowding

"This appears to have been a robbery that went terribly bad. Somebody died that didn't have to."

So for a robbery to have gone terribly good? The criminal would have gotten the money, killed the witness "that did have to die" and still be unidentified?????
