A cursing man may have sparked Gerardo Roldan to kill him Sunday night, with one witness telling a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy that Roldan body-slammed the man into a canal west of Boynton Beach and left him for dead, according to an arrest report.
Roldan was arrested later that night at the
Three Amigos convenience store, within walking distance of the canal, near State Road 7 and Boynton Beach Boulevard.
He faces second-degree murder charges and is in the Palm Beach County Jail without bail.
The sheriff's office has not released the name of the victim.
It is not known if the two men knew each other.
Deputies said Roldan, 36, was at a nearby gas station talking on the phone to his mother Sunday, then rode his bike near a bridge.
Roldan told deputies that a man cursed at him, and then the two fought, though Roldan gave conflicting statements, according to the arrest report.
Roldan, who the sheriff's office said was an Illinois-born laborer with no known local address, told deputies he didn't try to save the victim "because of the alligators in the water."
