CORAL SPRINGS - A Coral Springs teen tried to abduct an 11-year-old girl from her home early this morning, police said.
Timothy Christian Schlafer, 18, was arrested today on charges of armed kidnapping and armed burglary.
Police say he broke into a home in the 8700 block of Northwest 40th Street about 2 a.m. through a rear sliding glass door. He then grabbed a large knife from the kitchen, walked up a flight of stairs to the girl's bedroom and took her from her bed, officials said. The girl's grandmother woke up during the incident and yelled at Schlafer to put the girl down, at which point Schlafer set the girl down and ran out the front door, said Sgt. Joe McHugh, Coral Springs police spokesman.
Officers found Schlafer at a nearby golf course and said that Schlafer had a condom in one of his pockets and that his pants zipper was partially undone, according to an arrest report.
Neither the grandmother nor the girl were injured, said McHugh.
The girl and her grandmother said they did not know Schlafer and had never seen him before.
Police are looking into another burglary that happened in the neighborhood overnight that may be related to this incident, McHugh said.
Anyone who has noticed anything suspicious in the neighborhood or who has additional information is asked to contact Detective Kim Eveker at 954-346-1388.
