GOOD: Car Jacker Shot By Car Owner - Memphis, TN

Memphis Car Burglar Shot by Vehicle’s Owner and Held at Gunpoint|Eyewitness News Everywhere - ABC24 - CW30 - Memphis TV

MEMPHIS, TN – Memphis Police say a man caught stealing from a car was shot by the owner of the vehicle and held at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police say the incident happened around 3:00 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2008, on Parakeet Drive in the Westwood area of Memphis.

The owner of the burglarized SUV says he and his wife woke up to the sound of a big crash and his dogs barking. The man went outside to find out what was going on, and discovered a crook dangling from his SUV trying to steal items from inside.

According to the vehicle’s owner, he repeatedly told the accused car burglar to get out of the SUV. He says he was not able to see the burglar’s hands and did not know if the suspect had a weapon, so he shot the crook in the buttocks.

Investigators say the man then walked the accused burglar to the front porch of the house and held him there at gunpoint until police and an ambulance arrived.

The accused burglar was taken to the Med in non-critical condition.

Police say the SUV owner will not be charged.

What a pain in the butt... The BG's words, not mine!

Not really a clear situation...hope the homeowner is NOT charged (officially). I would not have recommended moving around with the BG...just held at gunpoint until the cops arrived.

    Stay armed...stay safe!

Let's see ... car alarm, barking dogs, big crash, BG's butt up in the air hanging out one window - like a big bulls eye ... sounds to me like he was begging to be shot.

wouldn't making an intentionally non-fatal shot be considered "maiming" in most states? i thought deadly force was to be used with deadly intentions or not at all.

not that i fault the homeowner, but i would say it was at least risky on his part.

Sounds like a gray area shooting, but I guess it all depends on his state's law on defending personal property...but it's nice to know that sometimes the BG does get what he deserves...in the end.

Killing is not the goal. Stopping the crime is the goal. Less can be more, in the eyes of the law (ie, mercy).

It's a good thing the home owner wasn't a "crack" shot

Why must the news accounts always say that the good guy "will not be charged", as if he should possibly be??

They should take all these guys who shoot the bad guys and ask them if they will accept a relocation bonus if they move to South Florida to help out.

    Real iffy shoot IMHO......

I sure hope it works out for the guy and that the BG can't sit down again until he's half-way through his prison term, but if you shoot someone you think is stealing property from your unoccupied vehicle, without any evidence of an actual physical threat to you, in most cases it's gonna be your butt that ends up in the sling!
