Ugly: Gunman Opens Fire During an Arkansas Wedding (Merged)

Wedding guests chase gunman who shot bride, groom

Wedding guests chase gunman who shot bride, groom - CNN.com

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) -- An apparent stranger shot the bride, groom and two other people at an outdoor wedding in rural Arkansas, then was arrested after being chased by outraged guests, a sheriff's official said Sunday.

The wedding was just ending Saturday when the suspect approached with a 9 mm pistol and opened fire, Pope County sheriff's Lt. Aaron DuVall said. No one else was hurt.

About 50 people, including children, had attended the ceremony along Piney Creek north of Dover at a spot the lieutenant said was popular for picnicking and swimming. Dover is 64 miles northwest of Little Rock.

The suspect "was not associated with the wedding at all," DuVall said. "No one knew him."

Police arrested Patrick Paul Duvall, 29, after he was chased into a Russellville restaurant parking lot, said the sheriff's lieutenant, who is not related to the suspect.

DuVall declined to identify the four people who were injured, but he said the bride, groom and a third victim remained in the hospital Sunday. One victim was treated and released.

Without the victims' names, it wasn't possible to get information from hospitals on the patients' conditions.

Deputies say Duvall will remain in the Pope County jail at least until a bond hearing Wednesday morning. Jailers said an attorney had visited Duvall, but they declined to release the attorney's name.

The sheriff's lieutenant said Duvall faces four felony counts of first-degree battery and a felony charge of vehicle theft after the shooting.

A telephone number listed in Duvall's name in Russellville could not be found Sunday night.

Ugly: Gunman Opens Fire During an Arkansas Wedding

    As reported via ABCNews.com:

    Newlyweds Spend Honeymoon in Hospital
Gunman Opens Fire During an Arkansas Wedding

    By EMILY FRIEDMAN

    May 26, 2008

A bride and groom are in critical condition today after being shot by a stranger who angrily interrupted their outdoor wedding, and then returned moments later to fire a gun at them.

Patrick Paul Duvall allegedly opened fire during an outdoor wedding in Arkansas this weekend, injuring the bride and bridegroom and two others.

The motive for the Saturday shooting remains a mystery to police.

The police did not name the wounded couple, but family members identified them as Melissa Smith and Mike Beavers.

The outdoor wedding was taking place in a park near a swimming area in Pope County, Ark., when Patrick Paul Duvall got into an argument with the bride and groom while the ceremony was under way, police and family members said.

"[Duvall] did not know who these people were as far we know," said Pope County Sheriff's Lt. Aaron DuVall, who said that despite the similar surname, he is in no way related to the shooter.

The bride's nephew, Roger Cunningham, told Little Rock, Ark., news station KTHV-DH that Duvall "was in no way associated with anyone at the party."

"[Duvall] and his female friend were there swimming," Cunningham told KTHV-DH. "Duvall then got into a heated argument with the bride, Melissa Smith, and groom, Mike Beavers."

"He went to his car, got a gun and began shooting at the wedding party," said Cunningham.

The bride and groom, who had completed their vows just minutes before the shooting started, were wounded. A wedding guest and a bystander were also shot, DuVall said.

The shooter fled the area in a stolen truck, police said.

The newlyweds remain hospitalized in critical condition today, along with the wounded guest. The bystander has been released from the hospital.

Duvall, 29, is facing four felony counts of first-degree battery and a felony charge of vehicle theft.

Another unexpected nightmare...at a wedding in the park...for no reason...

If you have a weapon, going anywhere without it could cost you dearly.

This guy shoots four people, steals a truck and runs away, and the court would consider a bond?Something is 'wacked' here...

This guy should never see the natural light of day again...

Stay armed...even during the honeymoon ceremonies...stay safe!

I carried at a wedding two years ago, last week in Philly for a wedding, will carry next weekend for a wedding in St. Louis, and in December too, for my daughter's. She may object, but what she does not know will not get her PO'd.

Jeez, who would've thought to carry at their own wedding.
That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?

Am I the only one who thinks it's moronic that we will charge you with murder if you go to the truck, get your gun, shoot to kill, and succeed, but that we will only charge you with battery if you do the same things and aren't a very good shot? Just seems stupid. Like rewarding the idjits that DON'T learn to shoot well...

Yep...that is my S.O taking care of that.
Thank God I wasnt on duty Saturday...I had to teach a Womans CHL class.Otherwise, I'd have been in the middle of it.

Beleive it or not...the whole thing started over a dog.A fight ensued, and the shooter got his tail handed to him. He got mad and got his gun.The bride took a 9MM right between the eyes...and lived to tell about it. Another took a shot right through the cheeks, yet another in the chest. Another was a superficial wound.

Needless to say, there was much beer involved.

Lt Duvall is the Investigator and is currently running for Sheriff. He's a good man and more than likely will be the next.

Witnesses: Wedding-day shooting out of nowhere

    Story date: May 27, 2008

Bride and groom airlifted to UAMS; suspect remains in police custody awaiting hearing
    By Mary Kincy Benefield
    News Editor
Down an isolated strip of dirt and gravel off Rushing Road north of Dover, a concrete bridge, passable only in times when the water is low, spans the width of a narrow curve of Piney Creek where, when the weather is warm, only the mosquitoes are thicker than the locals who gather there to cool themselves in the creek’s muddy water.
Buffered on all sides by woodlands and hay fields, the feeling of quiet isolation permeating the area is usually interrupted only by the jarring unsightliness of Budweiser cans partially buried in the mud along the banks of the creek and the occasional stir of dust kicked up by the wheels of passing trucks.
On Saturday, however, the peace was broken by the anxious wail of sirens after what began as a joyous occasion for one group of people and a day of fun in the sun for another turned violent, leaving a bride and groom — along with two others — bloodied just minutes after their wedding on the banks of the creek.
Although authorities are releasing few details at this time, Pope County sheriff’s lieutenant Aaron DuVall said Monday the violence broke out after “some type of argument” began between Patrick Paul Duvall (the two are not related), 29, and someone else present at the scene.
Multiple witnesses on Saturday, all of whom declined to provide their names, indicated the argument may have originated as a result of a dog running loose near the water, although DuVall said he could not confirm that information.
Whatever the reason, at some point Duvall allegedly walked to his vehicle, retrieved a 9-mm handgun and “began firing shots, just at random,” DuVall said, apparently to the shock of those present, none of whom still at the scene just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday indicated they were aware any such violence was about to break out prior to hearing the first shots.
Officials have declined to release the names of those injured in the shooting, but did confirm the bride and groom were among those felled. A third victim was present to attend the wedding, DuVall said, while a fourth victim was apparently unrelated to the wedding party.
After the shooting, according to DuVall and eyewitnesses, Duvall, after abandoning his white sport-utility vehicle halfway across the creek — perhaps after realizing the water was too high for him to successfully cross the aptly-named “Low Water Bridge” — apparently ran to a neighboring farmer’s field, where he allegedly stole an older model red Chevrolet Silverado truck and fled the area.
Behind was a scene of chaos, according to witnesses, where adults scrambled to help those injured in the shooting — at least one of whom was reportedly shot in the head or neck area — even as children continued to splash and play in the water.
Meanwhile, Duvall had reached State Highway 7 and was traveling southbound at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, Russellville Police Department (RPD) Public Information Officer Joshua McMillian said late Saturday. Eventually in pursuit were Pope County Chief Deputy Coroner Doug Hottinger and RPD Officer Michael Paterak, McMillian confirmed.
Then, as inexplicably as the shooting began minutes before, Duvall, upon reaching the outskirts of Russellville, apparently pulled into the parking lot of a Burger King restaurant on North Arkansas Avenue and surrendered to police. DuVall said the arrest occurred without incident.
Before being transported to the Pope County Detention Center to await a Wednesday bond hearing, Duvall was transported to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where minutes later each of the four shooting victims would also arrive. There, he was treated for unspecified injuries and released to police custody.
DuVall said the injuries were not a result of Duvall’s arrest, but could provide little information as to their origin.
“Whatever injuries he received had to have occurred either at that scene on Rushing Road or between there and Russellville,” he said.
Later, as DuVall and other investigators began the task of interviewing witnesses — including some of the estimated 50 in attendance at the wedding — both the bride and groom were airlifted to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock for treatment.
In a press release, Brenda Harrison, a spokesperson for Saint Mary’s, said the couple was “stabilized” before the transfer, although officials are not releasing information about their overall conditions at this time.
Two other victims — a male and a female — remain in the local area, with one released from the hospital prior to Monday, DuVall said, and another who was initially placed in an ICU unit transferred to a regular room Sunday, according to Harrison’s release.
DuVall, who said investigators had interviewed 25-27 witnesses as of early Monday afternoon, indicated further details would likely be available in the coming days.
“Tomorrow we’ll be meeting with the prosecutor to try to put some of this together,” he said.
Meanwhile, the sounds of children splashing in the water around Low Water Bridge were muted Saturday night as the remnants of a several simple wedding decorations fluttered from trees, keeping silent watch over several drops of rose-red blood scattered on a rocky shore where less than 12 hours before a couple pledged their lives to one another.

Check it out. The writer of this article attended our first Womans Only CHL class when that was happening.

No matter where you go, wedding, grocery store, mall, gas station, church, etc etc... always, ALWAYS carry when you can. We never know when, where or how this may happen when we are nearby.

That is the honest to God truth.

Even on a creek bank in the mountains, miles away from civilization, its getting to where you cant even have a wedding without someone getting stupid.

If the wedding party caught up to him, how is he even still alive? I would think mob mentality would take over and he would be beaten unmercifully.
