RIVIERA BEACH — A man was shot at Ocean Reef Park on Singer Island Saturday night in front of dozens of people, including children attending a birthday party, according to Palm Beach County sheriff's officials.
The man, whom sheriff's officials identified this morning as 37-year-old Joseph Dubar, was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Shot once in the upper left side of his back, Dubar's injuries do not appear life threatening.
A fight broke out at the busy park at around 7:30 p.m. after a group of men walked past a birthday party and began insulting the guests, said sheriff's office spokesman Eric Davis. When the argument began, the party's guests, including families with young children, ran to their cars.
About 15 minutes later, someone fired several shots in the parking lot. Authorities think the attack might be gang-related.
Authorities say about 200 people were in the park during the incident. "It could have turned out to be a tragic situation with so many people in the park," Davis said.
Anyone with information should call sheriff's investigators at (561) 688-3400.
