GOOD: Gunman shot dead by autozone employee

    1 dead in botched robbery | ajc.com

A DeKalb County auto parts store employee shot and killed a would-be thief Thursday night during a botched armed robbery attempt, police said.

DeKalb County police are still looking for a second would-be robber, who fled on foot after the shooting.

Just before 10 p.m., police responded to an armed robbery and person shot report at the Auto Zone at 1805 Memorial Drive in Atlanta.

"One of the employees saw two individuals in the parking lot changing clothes and putting on masks," DeKalb Police spokesman Marcus Hodge said.

The two men entered the store with weapons drawn, but the store employee began firing a gun of his own, police said.

"He struck one of the suspects," Hodge said. "The other guy ran away on foot."

The man who was killed dropped his weapon in outside the store.

Police weren't sure if the second suspect got into a vehicle to escape.

Several customers and other employees were in the store at the time of the incident, Hodge said.

This wasn't the first robbery attempt at the store, he said.

"There have been some cases where this store has been robbed," Hodge said. "That's probably the reason the employee had a gun."

Police are still investigating the incident, and hadn't charged the employee, Hodge said.
This is off of Covington Hwy not far from here... and these places gets robbed all too often, one time a customer waiting outside a car parts store was shot and killed after he got robbed outside the store. Covington Hwy has too many ghetto places branching off, and too many easy to rob places... I am glad these gunmen are reaping what they have sowed.

It's becoming clear that dumb robbers will eventually be outsmarted and out gunned by honest law abiding citizens. I hope the employee gets to keep his job for a job well done.

Shame he didn't get both of them.

If it were Super America or Pizza Hut, the district manager would ask the employee "How come you're not dead like you are supposed to be?"

Glad the story had a good outcome, one in the hand beats two in the bush.

    Ditto.

But you know, I'd rather he lose his job than be another citizen and son and possibly husband as well as dad to lose his own life to criminal victimization.

Good on that guy for taking measures to do what had to be done, as unpleasant and stressful as it no doubt was and for his psyche will be.

I was an Autozone manager for 8 years. The man will be fired.Like many mass merchandisers, you, the employee, are cannon fodder. The book read no guns, years ago when I was there. We were told not to resist in any way.It was OK with the company if gang bangers entered the store with pistols hanging out of their droopy drawers.Autozone even removed the counters in many stores. They put in pods. That made it easy for a customer to hit or stab you.Pitt Hyde, the founder of Autozone, was much like Sam Walton. He new how to operate a business. When men like these pass on,the companies are left to the college boys who have never experienced real life.I always said,if the 'higher ups' had to work in a store, things would have been different.

    Great outcome!

Being cognizant of his surroundings helped this employee get the advantage.

Too bad there is no repercussions against a business that fires an employee for valuing their life!
