GOOD: Retired 71yo Marine shoots 2 BG's at Subway

Former Marine's Actions Called Into Question - Miami News Story - WPLG Miami

PLANTATION, Fla. -- The family of one of the men who was shot by a retired United States Marine while they attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop said the customer shouldn't have pulled the trigger.

According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Donicio Arrindell, 22, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.

Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.

Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger.

"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.

Her husband, Ivory Jones, also condemned the media for its portrayal of Lovell's actions.

"I don't condone what they did, (but) I definitely don't condone the news people making him out to seem like they're making a hero out of this man because he shot somebody down," he said.

But Lovell's neighbor said he made the right decision.

"He did the right thing," said Wendi Hill. "I mean, I was glad that it was them that got shot and not him."

Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn't be charged.

I don't think that the customer should have shot the perps one time, three times would have been better, 2CM 1H...each!

Make the customer out to be a hero?
Not a hero, just a great shot!...

I remember that being one of the first things they taught us in Boot Camp. No matter how long you're in, or how long you've been out. If you do something news-worthy, the "Marine Corps" will be branded to you for life.

Good on him for his actions.

That's the danger in our society these days. All of these old Marines in civies, toting guns. It's almost getting to the point that, no place is safe to rob. It's a real shame. NOT!

They seem to think their little angel should be able to pull armed robberies without fear of being kilt by anyone other than the police

The robbery happened a year ago.

    If the story's correct ...

Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger.

"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.
Oh, okay. Then perhaps the man should have taken little Fredrick's style of law into his own hands, marching to your home to forcibly rob from y'all. How about that, grandma? That'd make everything okay, right? Pointing guns at each one of you, marching you into the back room for ... for, God knows what evil. That would be okay, right?

Wrong. Little Fredrick was a gremlin that night. He deserved to be stopped. He and his friend violently attacked people at that store, then began herding them into the back room for an assumed execution. THAT is the point at which EVERYONE has the absolute right to say "No." No, little Fredrick, what you're doing is wrong. No, little Fredrick, you will NOT be allowed to execute me. No, little Fredrick, your little escapade at our expense is over and done with ... at your expense.

Suck it up, Fred. Someone died because of your violence. You should be charged with aggravated robbery and murder. You have no right to do what you did, or to do it again. By the way: do they allow personal knee pads to be brought to the Big House? I always wondered about that. You should check it out.

Grandma: you're misled to think little Freddie was a good boy, had unjustifiable violence done to him, or was "dissed" or abused in any fashion. His robbery threatened deadly force and caused death because of it. The only bright spot was that the citizens he threatened decided to not be quietly executed. Freddie played the adult 'banger's game and got an adult response. It is what it is.

Hello? Lady, your grandson was probably taking this man into the bathroom to splatter his brains all over the walls, since he probably didn't want any witnesses.

    Give me a break.

Stopped both of the robbers in their tracks. Seems like a win for himself, Subway and society at large.

Identifies John as a law abiding citizen.

First off, had your son or daughter done their job properly raising your grandson (or you if you were the ones raising him) the odds would have been much better that he would not be in the hospital right now and his partner would not be on a slab.

Pretty cut and dried. Now the rest of the douche bags watching this will think twice when they see an old guy trying to eat his sub in peace.

That's probably part of the reason her grandson went bad - no consequences to his bad actions as a child (Ohh, don't spank him for that, he's just a little boy). Getting away with things through the years instead of being disciplined for them.

I hate it when local news outlets publish this unfiltered "mama babble". If these people would have paid attention earlier, the "baby" would still be alive/in good health. Its YOU (=parents/grand parents) who are at fault for getting your kid shot. It is not the victims fault. Luckily, in Florida, if the shooting is ruled justified, they are not allowed to sue the shooter!

If A Responsible reporter was covering the story when Grandma was saying they shouldn't of shot him I would have asked so how many crimes has junior been arrested for and how many convictions.
