This is very stupid and sad.

ALWAYS treat a firearm like it's loaded.
NEVER point your firearm at anything you aren't willing to kill or destroy.

The story states "accidental discharge", but I'm guessing they mean "negligent discharge". Can't know for sure unless an updated article appears after the investigation.

Every skeet range I ever shot at unless you were in the shooting position your gun was either broke open or action was open, this is totally uncalled for, negligent manslaughter comes to mind

I went to one that wasn't that way. Once. Never went back.

The guy beside me had an over/under, loaded, action closed, and was resting the barrel on his foot.

Very sad and needless. I've never heard of an open action, unloaded firearm actually going off. One of these days people will wake up.

It isn't the loaded guns that accidently get people hurt. It is the "unloaded" ones.
Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.

If you follow the three rules of gun safety this can't happen.

ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot!

ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use!!

In skeet the gun is not ready to use until you are on the station. If these folks had been following the other rules this could not have happened.

What a shame. My prayers go out to everyone involved.

Details from this article are awful light to be suggesting what may have caused the problem, I won't be speculating.

Two things are for sure, we lost a member of the gun culture, and the anti-gun crowd has gained a statistic to use against us.
Liberty is an inherently offensive lifestyle. Living in a free society guarantees that each one of us will see our most cherished principles and beliefs questioned and in some cases mocked. It's worth it.

Indeed, a sad situation. Could easily have been prevented had the shooter not been an idiot.

On Cheney... Where is that guy? I haven't heard a thing about him in a long time.

Absolutely ... Rule #1. Anyone violates that where I go, they are off the range and won't be allowed back.

I'd have been tempted to stick around, just in case.
