Gunman critically wounds 7 in TN church: MERGED

Gunman critically wounds 7 in Tennessee church - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Seven people were shot and critically wounded Sunday at a Unitarian church in Knoxville, Tennessee, authorities said.

Police have arrested a suspect in the attack, which occurred about 10 a.m. ET at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, said Capt. Brent Seymour, a Knoxville Fire Department spokesman.

According to church members, children from the congregation's summer theater workshop were preforming the musical "Annie" when the gunman opened fire, WVLT reported.

The seven gunshot victims were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center -- located just across the Tennessee River from the church -- Seymour said. About 12 others were treated for minor injuries at the church, he said.
Just in. Not much info yet. Another senseless tragedy.

This is exactly why Mr. Kimber attends church with the the wife and me.

Stay armed...go to church regularly...stay safe!

Just a terrible, terrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

No, it is not. Perfectly legal, no permission of anyone (except possessing the Handgun Carry Permit) is required...unless the church specifically posts the building/property as off-limits.

An update at the link in the OP almost sounds like this was a random event?

ETA: Upon looking at the initial news report again, I see that I was mistaken in my reading. Twelve were treated for minor injuries at the scene, but seven were injured critically. I guess I was hoping it wasn't as bad as it is...and it could get a whole lot worse.

    Pssht. EVERYONE's a critic!

Wonder what the rest of the story is. That denomination isn't exactly known for inflammatory preaching, and this was a theater production. Sounds like either a nutcase who just happened to lose it at a church, or that's where his 'ex' happened to be. I doubt it had much to do with the church in and of itself.

Though Mr. Smith and our good friend Sturm join us each Sunday nonetheless.

Prayers for the wounded, and that justice would be served.

I wouldn't doubt that it's just another nut job looking to make himself famous at the expense of innocent lives. I hope TN has a death penalty.

Yes, we do...but, it is used so infrequently that we may as well not. It takes forever to actually put one of these rabid dogs down that sit on death row that they are much more likely to die of old age than of the needle the deserve.

I love Tennessee but there are many things about our state I would change. This is but one of them.
