Man who shot robber turns 98

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Today is Virgil Kindig's 98th birthday.

Kindig is the Memphis resident who slipped free of his bonds when the same robbers invaded his home for the fourth time in a week and shot one of them in March of last year, wounding him.

Kindig's wife died a week after the shooting. Both he and his son said the robberies and shooting likely contributed to Ruby Kindig's passing at age 93.

Virgil Kindig stood between his two daughters in front of a birthday cake yesterday in his home and did something they'd never seen him do in public. He cried. He said the celebration was wonderful and that he never expected it.

About the robberies -- James Thweatt and accomplice Cindy Wilson pleaded guilty to them and are serving prison sentences.

It's just too bad that he wasn't succesful in shooting the SOBs the first time, and that they made it to trial afterwards. I wish everyone had the fighting spirit that this old man has.

    fourth time in a week
Holy moly - I could imagine him having Claymore's set up round the place after that!!!

Good for him tho - great determination probably but sad it seemed the incident brought on his wife's demise. Attacks on the very elderly do bad things to my ''retribution'' center - but I sure wish all extreme elderly did take care of themselves by having both the means and ability at their disposal.

Pity too - only wounding a result.
